Wesley & Laura

Laura writes:
Wesley and I have known of each other since elementary school. He was in love with my best friend in fifth grade.

We “went out” in eighth grade for a month or so. Different middle schools was so rough, and it didn’t last. In high school, we became great friends and started dating again sophomore year. When it was time for college, I stayed in our hometown, and he went off to Santa Barbara, California, where he’s been most of the year for the last four years. Even with the long distance, we knew that we were perfect. In total, we will have been together for six years this March.

In November, I came to visit from Texas for Thanksgiving and Wesley’s birthday. He took me to a beach that we often visited during the summer we lived in Santa Barbara, with cliffs overlooking the beach and the ocean. It was sunset, which is our favorite time of day. As we sat and talked on the cliffs, Wesley said he wanted to go down to the beach. We both stood up, but instead of walking down the cliffs, he knelt down, took the ring out of his pocket, and asked me to marry him.

I said yes, and he told me that the people behind us with cameras were his friends taking pictures of us, so we now have pictures from the actual proposal! We spent the rest of the night on the phone with family and friends!

We’re now planning our marriage on October 23, 2010 here in Texas. And even though we’re still 1600+ miles apart, we know that there is nothing else that we would rather be doing. This is love.

Jerry Lewis & SanDee Pitnick

The Lewis' minutes after they married (printed in The Boca Raton News).

Some people are superstitious of the number 13, but not Jerry Lewis. In fact,13 is his lucky number and that’s why he chose to marry SanDee Pitnick on this day in 1983.

Although Lewis first met Pitnick when he cast her as a disco dancer for his film “Hardly Working”, their relationship may have really blossomed from the “Florence Nightengale” effect. In 1982, when both were living in Las Vegas, Lewis had to have emergency heart surgery. He credited Pitnick with his recovery.

The couple married in a private ceremony in Key Biscaine, a resort island in Florida.

Fast-forward 27 years to today, the couple are parents to an 18-year-old daughter and are still very much in love.

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Mothers and Laws

By Social Grace

Always include your future Mother-in-Law.  Don’t get along? Take her to lunch and get to know her. Remember, you don’t have to be best friends…just family.

So you might not be ready to take her dress shopping but asking your future Mother-in-Law to attend a friendly lunch or coffee can do wonders for your relationship. Get to know her; don’t be shy! She’s your hubby mama so try your best to get along! If you happen to know her too well and wish you didn’t just try to grin and bare it through the pre-wedding festivities and then give her some space once they are all through. If you do have your issues there is no reason to push it and make anything more tense.

Andrew Lloyd Webber & Madeleine Gurdon

Sir Lloyd Webber and his Lady.

Sir Lloyd Webber and his Lady.

The man who brought Cats and The Phantom of the Opera to the stage married a former equestrian star 19 years ago today.

Andrew Lloyd Webber met his third wife, Madeleine Gurdon through his neighbors who loved horses.

Their wedding date fell shortly after the Persian Gulf War and the couple debated on whether to postpone their nuptuals.

“We feel we should not give in to the forces that have caused this situation and that we should continue with the party” The couple said, via a written statement released to reporters.

A year later, Lloyd Webber was knighted and Gurdon gave birth to their first child. Over the next few years, they added two more children to the family.

In 2009, Lloyd Webber was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After undergoing treatment, he announced that he was cancer-free in January. Sir Lloyd Webber and his Lady obviously have a lot to celebrate this year.

Cheers to the couple and here’s to many more years of wedded bliss!

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Wedding Reality

By Social Grace
Piggy bank from German bank HASPA, around 1970.

While planning your wedding budget stay within your financial means and figure out what you and your fiance or you and your family can actually spend.

Weddings can be expensive. We at Proposal use the word ‘can’ because we know that there are ways to have beautiful events at reasonable prices. The two biggest factors: limiting your guest list and limiting alcohol. It is also important not to get too swayed by unnecessary expenses such as over priced flowers, designer gowns and extras like photo booths. To quote the ‘Etiquette Book’ by Virginia Sydney Hale, “If the young couple are in modest circumstances, nothing could be more foolish than to prepare for a wedding on a scale that is all out of keeping with their financial standing.” Though her book was written in 1923 that advice still stands true today. Don’t start out your life together with wedding debt!

Close & Shaw

Glenn Close, actress and independent lady, who was married twice before and said she’d never marry again, proved three times a charm on this day in 2006, when she married her long-time boyfriend, David E. Shaw.

The five-time Oscar nominated actress and the entreupreneur had a small, private ceremony at Shaw’s beachfront home in Maine. The busy couple may have work on their minds but they have love in their hearts!

Not only do they have love for each other but they have love for our four-legged friends!  Close may have played Cruella DeVille on the big screen but just read her blog (http://www.fetchdog.com/blogs/livelylicks/)and you’ll see how kind her soul really is!

Congratulations to a successful 4 years!!

Frank Capra & Lucille Reyburn

Seventy-eight years ago today, director Frank Capra married his sweetheart, Lucille Reyburn, in a Brooklyn Courtroom after two years of dating.

Their romance began one night when the filmmaker was heading to the Coronado Hotel in San Diego, CA with some friends. He missed the ferry and Capra had to ride solo with the new girl in town, a young Lucille.

Capra himself couldn’t have directed a more beautiful scene: a bright moon, sparkling water and a romance that would last a lifetime.

Mrs. Capra passed away in 1984 and Mr. Capra followed in 1991. Their 52 years of marriage yielded four children and several grandchildren. It sure sounds like this cinematic couple had a wonderful life.
