Results: Proposal of the Week Contest (Week 13)

By Tia Ayers

May we present this week’s winners:

Margaret Dulis & Louis Protano
Date:  May, 1974
Location:  Louis’ Trans Am, parked in Marine Park in Brooklyn, New York

Louis & Margaret

Louis writes:
I am a person who likes to do things in a grand manner.  But on this particular occasion, fate spoke differently.  One particular night, my girlfriend and I were hanging out in my Trans Am and talking about things.  All of the sudden it crossed my mind, if the day came, would marriage be a possibility in our relationship.  So I threw it out there and I wanted to ask the question, “Would you marry me, if I asked you one day?”  Well, as soon as I said “Would you marry me…”, my now-wife started hugging me and kissing me!  But I never finished the sentence!!  I was in such shock, I did not know what to do.

As days passed, I wanted to explain that I had not asked the full question.  But, she got more and more excited, and I liked her too much, so I confided in my best friend.  My best friend almost died, because he was dating his girlfriend for three years, and we were only dating for three months.  He really wanted me to tell her the truth, or otherwise he was going to have to propose!

The more I tried to tell her, I knew she would be very sad.  So I said, what the hell.  I went through with it, and did not tell her the true story for 15 years.  We will be married for 35 years in August.  It was the best mistake I ever made!

Week 13: Pick the Perfect Proposal

By Tia Ayers

It’s a new month and a new contest! Here are three brand new contestants telling their proposal stories. Which one is your favorite? Cast your vote below. (You can vote once a day until Friday at 12:05 am, so come back and show your love to your favorite couple!)

1. Amanda Pride & Corey Seguin
Date: Friday, February 13, 2009
Location: Flagship Cinemas, Auburn, Maine

Amanda & Corey

Amanda writes:
Corey and I go to the movies all the time to see all sorts of different kinds of films, but it was my turn to pick, and since I’m a huge horror fan, I decided that the next movie we would see is the new Friday the 13th that was coming out the day before Valentine’s Day.  So he got us tickets. Little did i know I would end up in tears before the movie even started.

We sat down and I remember thinking, “God this place is packed!” I hate it when there is so many people and I knew we should have just waited another time. As the lights went down and the beginning advertisements rolled, nothing seemed out of the ordinary or so i thought. On the screen, a voiceover was talking about it being lovers weekend, “Blah blah blah…”

And then it said, “And now a special announcement…” I looked up and it was my boyfriends face on the big screen, asking me to marry him.  By that time, I was covering my face, balling my eyes and he was on one knee beside me. Everyone was staring and clapping and it was embarrassing, but so sweet because he is so shy and would never do that for anyone but me. It was PERFECT!

2. Margaret Dulis & Louis Protano
Date:  May, 1974
Location:  Louis’ Trans Am, parked in Marine Park in Brooklyn, New York

3. Kasey Klippstein & Colin Moss
Date: January 22, 2010, 4:17 pm
Location: New Orleans, LA

Colin & Kasey

Colin writes:
Being from Chicago and suffering through an unusually cold winter, we decided to take a spur of the moment vacation to New Orleans.  During our second day, we were walking from the Aquarium, along the Riverwalk back to the French Quarter.  Kasey was tired of walking all day, complained that her feet hurt, and wanted to go back to the hotel.

As we started making our way back to the hotel, I convinced her to stop into Pat O’Briens for a Hurricane and some local music.  We sat together, and at approximately 4:17PM (our anniversary is April 17), I pulled out a diamond ring, looked her in the eye and said “Will you marry me?” She of quickly responded with “Shut up!”, “Does my mom know?”, and “Are you serious?”.

She then, of course, said “Yes!”.  We spent the next 3 hours on the phone telling our friends and family back in Chicago the good news.  We are currently in the process of planning our wedding for the fall of 2011.

Now that you’ve read the stories, it’s time to vote for your favorite! You can vote once a day until Friday at 12:05am. Results will be posted on Friday morning!

Results: Proposal of the Week Contest (Week 12)

By Tia Ayers

The readers have spoken. They loved Evelyn & Omar’s story. They loved it so much that Evelyn & Omar have won four straight weeks in a row and have retired as Proposal of the Week Champions (the rules state they can only win for four weeks in a row). We’re going to take a week off from the Proposal of the Week Contest and start anew in May. So check back in two weeks for three completely new contenders!

Once again, congratulations to Evelyn & Omar and thanks to all the contestants!

Evelyn Protano & Omar Abdelhamid
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Date: February 13, 2010

Evelyn & Omar

Evelyn writes:
Omar and I got engaged the night before Valentine’s Day. For this story to make sense, you need to know that Omar and I have a thing with penguins, which started when he bought me a giant stuffed penguin when I was having a rough time at work. It’s been a running joke ever since.

Anyway, Omar said he didn’t want to wait to exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day, and suggested that we exchange gifts right then. Omar gave me three bags, one small, one medium, and one large. I opened the small bag, and it contained a set of penguin nesting dolls! In the middle of the first set of nesting dolls was a note that said, open bag number 2.

In the second bag, was another set of penguin nesting dolls! At the middle of this set, was a note that said open bag number 3. I opened the third and largest bag, and it contained two giant penguin nesting dolls! Inside the second nesting doll, was a black box with a beautiful ring. He proposed, and I said yes. :-)

2. Keith & Kinga Makenas
Location: Las Vegas
Date: December 28, 1999

Keith & Kinga

Keith writes:
In 1999, I booked a trip for my current wife and me to Las Vegas. I wanted to propose right away and set up for a limo to pick us up at the airport. We arrived tired after a day of work and a late flight. I could not find our limo driver for the life of me and my wife was getting impatient as she wanted to go to the hotel. No cell phone to call the company and a long line at the pay phone.

Finally, I found a limo driver standing around and he said he’ll take us. In the limo I was unable to find the ring in my bag. Finally I found it and was incredibly nervous and could only manage to hold out the ring and grunt. Surprisingly she said yes.

I was not aware that everything was shut down on the strip as the hotels prepared for the Millennium. Made sense why the trip was so cheap. Even though we’re not gamblers, we gambled the entire time and my wife only won when I was not around. Anytime I was near her she’d start losing and told me to move away, then she started winning. Today we’re very happily married with two beautiful daughters.

3. Nick & Sarah
Location: Chicago
Date: October, 2008

Nick & Sarah

Nick writes:
After four years of dating Sarah, I was ready to propose. I had recently had some business success and asked Sarah if she wanted to celebrate with a fancy dinner. It was the perfect cover. I would have the chance to prepare for the proposal while she was at work, and have everything set up when she arrived home. But on the big day, she ended up staying home from work . I attempted to feign pleasure, but suspicions were raised.

Despite her constant presence in the house, I got everything set while she was getting ready in the bathroom. I was as quiet as a mouse, running all over. The only problem was that I am rarely quiet, and raised her suspicions again as to my activities.

So, with two reasons for Sarah to be suspicious, I was convinced that she would see the proposal coming from a mile away.

We started the evening at home with hors d’oeuvres and wine. With butterflies in my stomach, I suggested that we play a little game before dinner. I had placed one-word notes around the apartment, with clues as to where the next note would be. Each note had a quality of Sarah’s that I love and appreciate. At each note, we would sit in a different room of our home and I would expound upon how wonderful she is.

After an hour and 6 notes, we were both relaxed and thoroughly enjoying ourselves. I couldn’t believe that she hadn’t realized where this was heading. I half-expected that she would throw her shaking hands to her face somewhere along the way, just like in the movies. But she never did, and just blissfully went along with the game.

At the last note, I sat on a stool that lowered me directly to eye level with Sarah.

I told her, “I knew in my gut that I loved you the first moment we met. I knew in my heart that I loved you as we traveled across the Atlantic for 3 years. And after living together for a year, I am completely and rationally convinced that I will love you the rest of my life. So, the only question that remains is, ‘Will you marry me?’.”

And just like in the movies, she threw her shaking hands to her face and could only repeat “What! Oh my god!” before finally exclaiming “Yes!”.

I gave her a simple gold band to symbolize the moment, but told her that we would choose an engagement ring together. Then, we cleaned our tear-lined faces and set off for MK, a wonderful Chicago restaurant. We spent the rest of the evening laughing and replaying the proposal.

Now that you’ve read the stories, it’s time to vote for your favorite! You can vote once a day until Friday at 12:05am. Results will be posted on Friday morning!

2. Jackie Lawinski & Michael Porco
Location: New York City
Date: February, 2010

Jackie writes:
Michael and I met in San Diego February 2, 2007. Ironically, we both came from New York, moving 3,000 miles only to find each other! From the moment we met, we were inseparable. After three years of dating, we decided it was time to move back home to be closer to our families. We planned a cross country road trip, taking ten days to drive from San Diego to New York, stopping in various cities along the way. The ultimate goal was to reach New York by February 2nd, our three year anniversary.

The trip didn’t exactly go as planned, or at least what I THOUGHT was the plan. We ended up (I mean, I ended up) running over a metal rod in the road which tore a hole in our gas tank, leaving us stranded in the middle of nowhere for two days. In addition, we chose to drive cross country during one of the biggest snow storms middle America has had for years, causing our trip to be re-routed again and again. And lastly, when we FINALLY made it to New York, what I thought was our three year anniversary dinner, turned out to be something much different, the best night of my life actually…the night he proposed!!

And we caught it all on tape!!! Here is the video he made:

3. Ryan & Alyssa Kavner
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Date:  February 7, 2007

Ryan & Alyssa

Ryan writes:
Alyssa has always been a fan of Ellen Degeneres and would tell me how awesome it would be to get engaged on her show. She had applied to get tickets to her show because she was a huge fan. She was not home when they called to tell her she was selected. I had asked the person on the phone what I would have to do to set it up. He had no idea so I had to take matters into my own hands. My friend worked on Desperate Housewives and The Ellen Show was trying to get their cast on the show. Publicity for Desperate Housewives put me in touch with the producers and the ball started rolling.

We happened to get on their Valentine’s Day episode and even when we got out of the car to go in my wife asked jokingly “Do you have the ring?” I thought she was on to me and my friend that was going with us to the show to watch it all go down. To make a long story short, I proposed on The Ellen Show.

My secret deeds were not done. I told her we would go to dinner by the beach and then swing by her parents house to show then the ring. When we showed up to the restaurant I had all her family and friends waiting to surprise her. I then gave her a photo album of our first year together and all the great things we had done.

My surprises were not over…. The next day I told her we were going to help some friends shoot a project by LAX and we had to pick up some equipment at the airport that the show I worked on at the time was lending us. I told her I needed her help and had my friend drive my car and secretly packed her bags in the trunk for a weekend getaway to Maui. We got married in Laguna Beach June 7th, 2008. Below is a link to the actual proposal.

2. Sara Jacobson & Sean McMullen
Location: New York, NY
Date: November 20, 2009

Sara & Sean

Sara writes:
I’m Sara Jacobson and I’m marrying Sean McMullen after a brief 21-year crush!

It started in 1989. I was attending middle school in West Hartford, CT where I became friends with a set of fraternal twins, Lauren & Erin. They invited me to their house one day and as soon as I walked into the living room, there he was sitting on the couch.

That was the beginning of my crush. Sean was much older than me, and never paid me any attention. What with him being in 10th grade while I was a lowly 7th grader, dating me would have been social suicide!

For years I would invite myself to Lauren and Erin’s for sleepovers, just to catch a glimpse of Sean. I would say in my most cheerful and flirty voice “Hi, Sean!” and he would act as if I wasn’t even in the room.

Years passed, and life took us down distant paths. But one fateful night, Thanksgiving time in 2008, I walked into a hometown bar and there, like an angel, was my “Seansy.”

I ran over to him and asked if he remembered me. He didn’t, but acted as if he did. Immediately we began a long-distance romance. He was in Boston, I was now in Miami…but thanks to facebook and text messaging we hardly went a day without contact.

In 2009, my company offered me a transfer to the NYC location. I wasn’t sure what this meant for Sean and me….but I knew I needed to be in the northeast. So I accepted the offer, and immediately Sean and I actively started dating. We spent weekends traveling back and forth from Boston to NYC. Sean, being a commercial lobsterman, spoiled me with boat rides and fresh lobster all the time.

On November 20th, Sean took me to my favorite park in NYC, Carl Schurz Park. We sat on a bench and watched the boats go by on the east river. He began acting weird and I got nervous. Then suddenly, he was down on one knee, asking me to spend the rest of my life with him. He presented me with the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. By January, he had quit his career, and moved to NYC, to begin our lives together.

Our wedding is going to take place on August 21, 2010 in Rhode Island. We couldn’t be happier.

3. Olivia & Kevin Masui
Location: Seal Beach, CA
Date: September 9, 2007

Olivia & Kevin

Olvia writes:
One Friday night, my boyfriend Kevin told me we were going to go to Las Brisas in Laguna Beach for lunch the next day and I knew something was up. You see, Las Brisas is the very first cafe Kevin and I ever went to and it’s totally romantic.

When Kevin suggested that we go to Las Brisas, I thought, “He thinks he’s so smooth! He’s going to propose to me and thinks I haven’t a clue!”

The next day, the restaurant was really crowded and Kevin said, “Oh, this is stupid. Let’s go to the beach.”

I innocently said, “Sure, that sounds fun,” as if I suspected nothing.

But the beach was super-crowded as well and Kevin said, “Hey let’s leave. There are too many people here.”

I tried to hide my disappointment as we left. After a few minutes in the car, I began crying. Kevin asked, “What’s wrong?”

I didn’t want to tell him, but finally I admitted that I thought he was going to propose. Sure enough, he started laughing at me.

“In time,” he said. “It will come in time.”

After dinner at his mom’s house that night, he said, “Let’s go to Seal Beach. It’s nearby and it’s really nice.”

I tried not to get my hopes up again. When we got there, it was dark and no one was around. I walked down to the water and he followed me.

We stood looking up at the stars. After a few minutes of standing there in silence, I figured that nothing was going to happen. I accepted the fact that this just wasn’t the right time and was a little sad.

Kevin said, “Liv, you really mean a lot to me.”

I looked at him and said, “You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me, Kev.”

He said, “Okay, here it goes…”

At that moment, Kevin dropped down to one knee in front of me. Holding out something in the darkness, he said “Will you marry me?”

I couldn’t tell if he was joking with me or not. I couldn’t see what was in his hand since it was so dark. I asked, “Are you being serious?”

Kevin started laughing and replied, “Yes! Will you be my wife?! Why do you think I’m down here with a ring?!”

I hesitated a moment, and then after I had realized that he wasn’t kidding, I dropped to my knees as well and began to cry.

“Kev, I would love to marry you!”

He slid the ring onto my finger. I could see its shimmer beneath the faint light of the night sky. It was beautiful.

Now that you’ve read the stories, it’s time to vote for your favorite! You can vote once a day until Friday at 12:05am. Results will be posted on Friday morning!

Week 9: Pick the Perfect Proposal

By Tia Ayers

Last week, Ari and John won our weekly contest. Will they win again this week or will a new couple take the prize? You decide. Read the stories and vote below. Remember, you can vote once a day, so make sure you come back tomorrow to vote for your favorite couple!

1. Ariel Baruch & John Laing
Location: On top of Mt. Sugarloaf in Sunderland, MA
Date: Saturday Oct. 17, 2009

John & Ari

Ariel writes:
It is widely accepted that one of the most breath-taking parts of Fall in New England is experiencing peak foliage. John and I had planned on driving through the Valley, camera in hand, to capture pictures of the changing leaves, something neither of them was accustomed to growing up in Florida.

After more than an hour of traveling (and no good pictures to show), we made their way to the top of Mount Sugarloaf, a mountain looking over the Valley in Sunderland, MA. It was a brisk Fall morning, one of the first truly cold days of the season, so there were only a few other people at the top. The view was incredible — I was busy snapping pictures when John directed her towards a patch in a field below. “What’s that?” he had asked, pointing at the field. After a few minutes of staring at the field, then at John, then back at the field, I finally understood what was happening.

With the assistance of a pumpkin patch, John proposed. Using roughly 1,000 pumpkins, the message “Ari, please marry me!” was laid out before me.

2. Ashley McElwee & Ryan Sjuts
Location: New York, NY
Date: September, 2009

Ashley & Ryan

Ashley writes:
Back in September I took Ryan to New York City. For Midwestern boy it was a big adventure and I loved sharing it with him. We had a blast walking around and seeing all the sites.

We went to Central Park on the last day in New York City- everyone has to have a hotdog once right? So Ryan suggest we eat up on a hill away from everyone else but still in sight of the lake because it would be more “romantic”. Now he never uses phrases like “more romantic” so I knew something might be up.

So he was really quiet and I was eating really slow. All he was thinking was hurry up and eat your hotdog so I can ask you to marry me! So I finally finish and asked him if he had a good time on the trip- his response?

“The only thing that would make this trip better is if you would spend the rest of your life with me.”

Blown. Away.

Turned to look at him and he was holding the ring. He said afterwards that he wished he had gotten down on one knee- but to me it was perfect.
