Pro Q&A Series: aNeMonE Handmade Paper Flowers

By Shannon Ayers

We at Proposal have fallen in love: we are now romancing the paper flower! When we first saw Washington based aNeMonE’s work we were absolutely floored. Beautiful, exquisite and unique, these flowers are made by hand, can be shipped anywhere in the world and will last you a lifetime. We repeat: they will last you a lifetime!

We were lucky enough to talk with Mary Eberle, co-owner of aNeMonE, and learn more about her craft and her business! Enjoy!

PROPOSAL: What is your role in the Wedding Industry & how long have you been working in your position?

ME: aNeMonE is the front-runner of custom-made bridal bouquets. We have found others who make flowers out of paper, but we have not found anyone making custom-designed bridal bouquets using art quality papers, beads, and coloring media. We have done weddings all over the country and ship flowers all over the world. We have been working with brides for 7 ½ years!

PROPOSAL: How long have you been making handmade flowers & how was aNeMonE formed?

ME: aNeMonE was born in November of 2002 after Nathan & Mary Eberle’s passion for art culminated in 600 paper flowers for their wedding. The business has since bloomed into a full-scale paper florist, transforming this vintage craft into a unique, modern art form.

PROPOSAL: Your work is clearly very unique, however, is there something about the way you work or a particular product that would be considered your signature?

ME: The fact that we can create both realistic flowers and fantasy flowers and that we use precious stones, beads and anything special that the bride has, like grandma’s brooch or a sleeve from mom’s wedding dress!

PROPOSAL: How many weddings or events have you created flowers for?

ME: Over 200.

PROPOSAL: Where can we find your site?

ME: http://handmadepaperflowers.com/weddings/

PROPOSAL: What are the benefits of having paper flowers at a wedding opposed to real flowers?

ME: Originally we would have told you that the benefits would have been that the flowers are created uniquely for the bride, the flowers are available in advance, thus eliminating all color and wilting problems, and that we are an eco-friendly option over real flowers. Over the years, however, we have come to realize that our brides primarily choose aNeMonE flowers because they get to keep them forever.

PROPOSAL: What would be helpful for a Bride & Groom to know or have in mind before they were to consult with you?

ME: It is always helpful if a bride and groom have a budget in mind. This is not totally necessary, as we can usually meet any budget. There are some people who think the flowers are paper, so they must be cheaper. This of course would be true if you make them yourself. We have tried very hard to match the cost of real flowers and in many cases we can, we do however mostly work with brides that consider there flowers to be works of art; because they get to keep them, they are willing to spend more than they would have on live flowers.

PROPOSAL: What piece of advice do you give a Bride or Groom (involving your field) that will impact how they plan their big day?

ME: Our number one word of advice is for the bride and groom to have fun. The wedding is only a party to celebrate the union of the couple. Too many people get hung up on the details, and when the day comes they cannot have fun. Our brides have hired professionals to take care of the details for them, so we try to remind them there is no need to worry. The other word of wisdom is that there are no rules to follow. This is your wedding so do what expresses you best!

PROPOSAL: What was one of your most fun experiences while working with a Bride & Groom?

ME: We have had so many fun moments. We work with brides who want to think outside of the box, so every wedding is different and creative.

PROPOSAL: What was one of the most challenging or unexpected things that happened during one of your jobs?

ME: The only challenges seem to come when the brides do not hire wedding planners; we come to set up the flowers, and in many cases we end up going the extra mile to ensure that our flowers look great against the unplanned venue. We always recommend hiring help if the bride has big plans and little experience executing plans. Once at a wedding, a cake traveled 3 hours to get there and showed up completely destroyed. The resort came to us for help, wondering if we had extra flowers to cover their reconstruction! We did, and the cake turned out looking great, covered with flowers that were not planned for it. No one but the bride and family knew it was missing a full layer.

PROPOSAL: How do you face a Bride who has turned in to her alter ego (a.k.a. Bridezilla)?

ME: We have had a few brides turn into what most would call a “bridezilla” and we in turn give them extra attention and every time the bride turns into our biggest fan sending many referrals our way!

PROPOSAL: Does your company have any exciting features or news that we can showcase in this article?

ME: aNeMonE was named by the Knot 2010 top 10 florist in Washington State!

PROPOSAL: Are you married?

ME: Yes.

PROPOSAL: Tell us about your proposal.

ME: We had traveled from Nashville to my home town in WA State to attend a wedding of a friend of mine, my husband asked my father while we were there, we then flew back out east, and drove to Milwaukee WI (where Nathan is from) for a music festival over the fourth of July. I knew Nathan way planning on asking me but did not know he had been traveling with my ring all this time! At one point we were leaving our picnic area and he was bringing his backpack, I said, “what are you doing? It’s 100 degrees leave the back pack here” he didn’t hesitate and threw my ring on the ground unattended!! If he had hesitated I would have known. (I love surprises but hate knowing they are coming!) He later proposed during the grand finale of fireworks and I started to laugh. He said, “Is that yes?”!!

PROPOSAL: Tell us about your wedding.

ME: Our wedding was before we knew anything about weddings. We did everything ourselves and planned it on a shoestring. Being artists we wanted to incorporate art as much as we could. We had a friend paint us while we said our vows, we had other friends dance, and then we of course made our flowers out of paper. We wanted a very traditional feel, yet we wanted to throw in the artist flare. I walked down the aisle to a Bjork song!

Thank you so much Mary for sharing your story with us! Be sure to check out more of aNeMonE’s work on their website:  http://handmadepaperflowers.com/

Pro Q&A Series: Black Marriage Day 2010

By Shannon Ayers

This Sunday, March 28th 2010 is Black Marriage Day. After learning about this new Day and the organization behind it, The Wedded Bliss Foundation, we had to talk with their Executive Director, Nisa Islam Muhammad.

Nisa formed The Wedded Bliss Foundation in 2001 and not only serves as Executive Director, but is also a senior staff writer for The Final Call Newspaper and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Read below to find out how Nisa has started a Marriage Revolution!

PROPOSAL: What inspired you to create the Wedded Bliss Foundation?

NM: I had a failed marriage and got tired of hearing all of the negative things being said about marriage in the Black community.  I wanted to do something to change the reality.  Wasn’t really sure if I could.  That was in 2001.  I’m always shocked at how well the notion of improving marriage in the Black community has caught on and the countless people who want to get involved and make change.

PROPOSAL: Black Marriage Day is this Sunday (March 28th ) For our readers who don’t know about this important day of awareness, tell us a little bit about what this day means to you and your community ?

NM: It’s an opportunity to do something positive to celebrate the joy many couples find in marriage.  It’s a chance to create cultural change to think positively about marriage in our community rather than the negatives we usually hear about our marriages such as another one bites the dust or it just didn’t happen.  It’s about changing the hearts and minds of people to reconsider marriage.

PROPOSAL: Is there any particular reason you chose March 28th to be Black Marriage Day?

NM: It’s a different date each year but always the fourth Sunday in March unless that day is Easter.

PROPOSAL: What were some of your biggest challenges that you have faced in bringing this organization to life and how did you overcome them?

NM: People asked me why I was doing this since I was single at the time.  I was very intentional in my goals and would not let the naysayers get in my way.  I knew this was a good thing to do and was affirmed every step of the way.  The more couples and singles I talked to the more I knew this work was needed and could be inspirational.  I knew that it could make a difference in the lives of people who were looking for hope and restoration.

PROPOSAL: Where can our readers find your organization’s website?

NM: www.weddedblissinc.com or www.blackmarriageday.com .

PROPOSAL: What activities do you have planned for Black Marriage Day 2010?

NM: We are partnering with Tyler Media to debut the new film You Saved Me in 25 cities around the country.  We are also partnering with Allied Media the marketing company for Tyler Perry’s new film Why Did I Get Married Too to sponsor vow renewal events in five cities around the country.  Also, communities and organizations large and small will have very unique events to celebrate Black Marriage Day.

PROPOSAL: What can our readers do in their communities to honor Black Marriage Day?

NM: They can go to www.blackmarriageday and download resources to conduct a Black Marriage Day event in their community.  We have flyers, brochures, fact sheets and lots more to help people be successful in their activities.

PROPOSAL: Can you tell us about the Marriage Hall of Fame? What qualifies a couple for receiving this honor?

NM: The Black Marriage Day Hall of Fame is a great activity communities can implement.  They induct incredible couples into their own Hall of Fame.  It’s a wonderful event that recognizes the joy and pain of marriage and the couples that stand the test of time.  Readers can get more information about this at www.blackmarriageday.com

PROPOSAL: What classes does the Wedded Bliss Foundation teach and how do they benefit couples?

NM: We offer classes using the curriculum Basic Training for Couples written by myself and Dr. Rozario Slack.  It’s eight sessions toward a better marriage.  It helps couples increase their awareness of the benefits of marriage, improves their communication, teaches how to manage conflict and deepens their commitment toward marital stability.

PROPOSAL: Can you tell our readers what You Saved Me is, and what is your involvement in the film?

NM: You Saved Me is a candid look into the lives of five couples that share how their marriages saved them.  Most people don’t think of their marriage or marriage in general as having “saving powers” but these couples go beyond the obvious and dig deep to give us the real deal of the benefits of marriage.  It’s a great production by a couple Ronnie and Lamar Tyler who also blog for EssenceMagazine.com and host a site called www.blackandmarriedwithchildren.com.  It will debut all across the country for Black Marriage Day.

PROPOSAL: Is there anything else you would like to add about your organization that we can include in this article?

NM: Wedded Bliss can be yours and we can show you how.  We offer classes for the DC Metro area and travel around the country bringing our successful program to those in need.  Call us.  We have a program for you.

Thank you Nisa for taking the time to answer our questions!

Pro Q&A Series: Simply U Events & Proposals

By Shannon Ayers

Today we were lucky enough to talk with the ladies behind Simply U Events & Proposals: Heather Vaughn, Lead Director & Kendall Holiday, Business Relations Director. These girls have taken the wedding industry head on. Not only have they mastered the difficult role of wedding consultant but they have also created an entirely new branch of the business: wedding proposal consulting.

Combining Heather’s education from the University of Colorado’s Journalism School in Advertising, and Kendall’s degree in Communications with a Human Relations emphasis from Texas Christian University (not to mention both girls’ experience working in the world of catering & event coordinating), it’s no wonder these girls have created a new art form when it comes to popping the question!

PROPOSAL: What is your background in the field of weddings and proposals?

HV: All of our Simply U Events and Proposals consultants started in the wedding planning industry before

Heather Vaughn

Heather Vaughn

branching off into marriage proposal planning. I did multiple internships related to the wedding/events industry throughout college. After I graduated from the University of Colorado, I took a catering manager position at Dove Canyon Country Club in Southern California. That experience gave me the confidence and resources to branch off on my own, which is exactly what I had always wanted to do, and Simply U Events and Proposals was born. Finding experience in the wedding planning industry is one thing, but the proposal planning business was unexplored. It turned into a lot of research.  I needed to find out whether or not marriage proposal help would be useful to gentlemen. I realized men wanted to be romantic and creative with their proposals, but didn’t always know how to be, so I created different proposal packages. Our proposal business has been a hands-on learning experience through clients.

PROPOSAL: What is your business and where is it located?

HV: Simply U Events and Proposals is a wedding and marriage proposal planning company. We are a team of wedding coordinators for brides-to-be and female marriage proposal consultants for “nearly engaged” gentleman. We have different proposal packages just as we have various wedding packages depending on what each client needs. Many don’t even know what a proposal consultant means; we assist men with personalizing their proposal ideas (they fill out our relationship questionnaire and we create at least two personalized proposal ideas) and/or plan any details needed for their perfect proposal (researching and booking vendors).  The way we see it is, if brides hire wedding planners for their day, then a man should be able to consult a female for a personalized proposal idea.

Our home offices are located in Northern and Southern California. I recently moved to Solano County with my husband, but Kendall still works in Orange County.  However, we help with proposals all over the country.

PROPOSAL: How did you come up with your business?

HV: Since high school, we’ve had a love and passion for wedding planning and the dream of starting our own event planning company.  The proposal planning idea came later. Originally a friend and I were chatting about how fun it would be to help with proposals. Then I starting listening to women tell their proposal stories, sensing some disappointment in the lack of thoughtfulness, and listened to gentlemen explain how hard it was to think of something romantic and creative.

PROPOSAL: When did you start your company?

HV: January of 2009

PROPOSAL: How can our readers contact you?

HV: Readers can visit us on our website www.simplyuevents.com and our blog www.lovetheyesgirls.com.  They can also email us directly at heather@simplyuevents.com or kendall@simplyuevents.com

PROPOSAL: What would it be helpful for a person to know before they come in to consult with you?

HV: Our goal is to help them create a personal and memorable occasion whether it’s for their wedding or engagement. Knowing the budget they prefer to stay within is definitely helpful. We are there to customize packages to their needs so essentially we will figure out the rest together.

KH: Even though we put the final details on the proposals, it is very helpful when the guys give us a lot of

Kendall Holiday

Kendall Holiday

information about their girlfriend, or have a few things in mind.  Of course, they don’t have to have the whole idea, just maybe one or two things he knows she for sure wants or for sure doesn’t want!

PROPOSAL: Can you give any advice on making a proposal special?

HV: Personalize, Personalize, Personalize! Spend time going down memory lane, finding unique characteristics about your relationship and use those. Tune into little things she loves (favorite vacation spot, gift from you, flower, book, etc) that you can include in your proposal. The extra touches of thoughtfulness are priceless. It never hurts to get another female’s opinion too.

In our experience, we found our proposal services to be effective because we customize the proposal to each couple. No proposal is alike because no other couple has shared the same memories, has the same loves, personalities, etc. We found that using our relationship questionnaire to gather significant details about the couple is key to creating their perfect proposal.

PROPOSAL: How do you assess on what would be the best proposal for a couple?

HV: We first start with clients filling out the questionnaire.  We find out the necessary details about her personality, his personality, and them as a couple. According to his answers, we each brainstorm proposal ideas. Then we share our ideas in a brainstorming session so we can create the best two or three proposal ideas for that couple. Many times, the proposals are a combination of different consultants’  ideas.  Knock on wood, but so far we’ve only received positive feedback!

KH: It really helps because anytime we all go through the questionnaires we write down words that pop out to us or seem very important. When we come together, we see what words, places or ideas we all have written down. We know that if all of us felt that was important, and it stuck out to us, that it needs to be a part of the proposal!

PROPOSAL: Obviously, your clientele is mostly men. But have you consulted women?

HV: No. We’ve never had a woman ask for proposal help.

PROPOSAL: Are you married/engaged?

HV: Yes, I am married.

KH: Not married, but close to being engaged. My boyfriend always gets the question, “Do you feel a lot of pressure ‘cause of your girlfriend’s business?” He laughs and says he feels pretty confident. I am excited to see what he decides, but trust me I have definitely dropped a few hints. How could I not?

PROPOSAL: If so, can you share with us your proposal story?

HV: My husband is in the Air Force, so he wasn’t able to leave pilot training in Mississippi which made things a little challenging. I flew out to visit Kyle for a few weeks and he planned a trip for us to visit a mutual friend near the beach in Florida (it was driving distance from where he lived). We stayed at this beautiful resort on the water. One night after we went out to dinner, he proposed to me in a remote spot on the beach. The summer we started dating, we spent ALL our time at the beach (we’re both from Southern Ca) so it was significant to us. He knows me so well though, because he knew I would want to go back and get the camera. When I walked into the room it was decked out with my favorite flowers, favorite champagne, favorite dessert, candles, etc. The camera was sitting there ready to go. It was beautiful. He even planned a day of jet skiing to continue celebrating the following day. The best part is, when he actually got down on his knee to propose I thought he was joking. Throughout the weekend, he would “fake” the proposal pose. For example, go down to tie his shoe and look up at me.  He had to show me the ring so I knew he was actually proposing. That was such a Kyle thing to do which made it even more memorable.

simplyuproposal02

Heather's wedding party. (Kendall is on her left!)

PROPOSAL: What was your wedding like?

HV: We got married outdoors, up by a ski lodge in Park City, Utah. My family has a place there for skiing and we just love it. The reception was inside the Empire Canyon Lodge. I think it was gorgeous! I chose white, ivories and champagne bridesmaid dresses for a classic, yet chic style. I played off the aspen trees, nature, to bring in natural elegance for the ceremony. It was one of the few times I saw Kyle cry! He is going to kill me for saying that. We brought in a little more color into the reception (blush pinks and yellows) but it was very subtle. The day was so full of love and support from our family and close friends that it was better than I imagined. I had so much fun!

Thank you, Heather & Kendall for taking the time to answer our questions!

Pro Q&A Series: Mathew Hornbeek

By Shannon Ayers

With last Friday’s feature article on the best wedding dances, we started thinking about music. After all, it’s one of the most important aspects to making a great party. Sure your reception is more than just a party, but it can still be ruined without the right music. We thought we’d get some advice from an expert so that you don’t end up with an empty dance floor!

Matthew Hornbeek, Founder of Loud DJs

Mathew Hornbeek, Founder of Loud DJs

Mathew Hornbeek is the founder of Loud DJs, Los Angeles and Ventura County’s premier disc jockey service. In the five years since his company opened, Loud DJs has grown to be an empire in the Southern California DJ world.

PROPOSAL: Thanks for taking your time to answer our questions, Mathew. Could you start by telling us about your role in the wedding industry?

MH: My job is to provide music and order to a wedding—or any event, whilst localizing “chaos” to the dance-floor and keeping worries away from a stressed Bride and Groom’s most special evening… all with style and class.

PROPOSAL: What first got you interested in being a DJ?

MH: I first became interested in DJ-ing in high school. A friend of mine was having a birthday party in her backyard and couldn’t afford a DJ. She gave me a call and that weekend I arrived with a surround sound system and a desktop computer to play some music at her party.

Prior to that day, I had never considered being a DJ but I’ve always been interested in music, I produced my first song, myself, when I was twelve and already had a large music collection. Not terribly long after that first gig I began amassing equipment and experience by doing friends’ parties, and soon friends-of-friends, and so forth.

PROPOSAL: How was Loud DJs formed?

MH: Loud DJs started in its earliest stages in 2005 as a side project while I went to college and worked for another much larger disc jockey company. I hired two other DJs to perform at events. By 2007, all three of us were busy with events back-to-back solely for Loud DJs. We continue today and take those years of hard work and experience with us.

PROPOSAL: What about the way you work is different from other DJs?

MH: As I’m sure all of our past clientele would agree, we really can mix music. I’ve seen a lot of mobile DJs and found that most are less disc jockeys and more announcers.

Don’t get me wrong, being able to keep an event smooth and organized over a microphone is a talent that requires loads of experience and confidence, which is something we bring to every event. But we find few mobile DJs that really shine in smoothly mixing music.

I suppose the talent of mixing and remixing in all the ways you would expect in a downtown Hollywood club is something we provide that many others do not. Every Loud DJ is an experienced master of ceremonies and disc jockey. Each of us regularly performs at clubs across LA County and Ventura County.

PROPOSAL: What would be helpful for a bride and groom to know or have in mind before they were to consult with you?

MH: Some couples have their wedding extensively planned out prior meeting with us which can never hurt, and some haven’t really thought it out yet. Either situation is fine with us, in fact, we are very happy to help out a couple with some direction and professional advice in organizing their wedding. While we are DJs and not wedding planners, we do know heaps of insider information and can help suggest great vendors in the area.

PROPOSAL: When faced with a bride and groom who don’t have their reception style planned out, how do you guide them into determining the style of their event as far as music is concerned?

An experienced DJ will have a natural ability to read crowds fairly well..."

MH: An experienced DJ will have a natural ability to read crowds fairly well, even on the spot. Every decade had its own unique style of music and culture attached to it and so observing the various age groups at a wedding can give me a good estimation of the music they like.

There are also a few tricks we have involving neutral dance songs, and seeing who taps their feet, bobs their head, etc. Also, I usually will ask the couple a bit about their family’s background beforehand, which may contain some clues, or ask a guest at the party who they like. But of course, as I discuss with almost every bride and groom, music selection always turns out best received when it is eclectic.

Oh, and if the whole family is present, Grandma may not want to dance to 50-Cent, so I suggest saving it for later!

PROPOSAL: What was one of your most fun experiences while working with a bride and groom?

MH: To be honest I have fun with every couple. If I didn’t feel a distinct connection to the clients I work with, I probably am not the right DJ for them. I work to see people smile when their favorite tune comes on, or the look on parents’ faces while they watch their children make a big step in life.

But of course, there are those couples that certainly stick out in my mind as absolute riots. I seem to get a lot of those! To give you an idea, the first wedding Loud DJs ever performed had a very elegant, spiritual ceremony, pulled off beautifully. But just to throw everyone off-track, the bride and groom had me play “Cotton-Eyed Joe” as the recessional song.  They locked arms and whirled down the aisle while laughter erupted. The night continued in that fashion from that point onward.

PROPOSAL: What was one of the most challenging or unexpected things that happened during one of your jobs?

MH: The most challenging issues usually occur as a result of poor planning. I had a wedding last year where the day of the wedding the couple had me change important cue songs for various bits of the wedding and rearranged the order of certain events. This was a fairly complex wedding already so this was certainly challenging and unexpected.

Of course, we accommodated everything and the night went very well, but remember, accommodating any change at a wedding means that the right people have to be in the right places at the right time all according to a new schedule.

Every vendor and individual hired at a wedding and the wedding party need to be up to speed on things, and even with small last minute changes there need to be a lot of people notified. DJs play a big part in the organization of a wedding and often getting everyone in the right spot is up to us.

PROPOSAL: Have you ever faced a bride who turned into her altar ego?

MH: No bridezillas yet, but I have seen my fair share of stressed-out couples. I even once saw a bride get so stressed out that a doctor was called out to the event.

div xmlns:cc=http://creativecommons.org/ns# about=http://www.flickr.com/photos/jaeden/25674322/a rel=cc:attributionURL href=PROPOSAL: Any new and exciting ventures on your horizon?

MH: One of the things that we’re just starting to get out in the world is the new “Level III” package which is a full concert-level lighting and sound set-up. We bring gigantic speakers and a 20-ft trussing system covered in lights and lasers for the discerning client that wants a club wherever they so desire.

Additionally, this year we’re planning on starting another Loud DJs in Myrtle Beach, SC, and taking bookings for mid-March, June, and early August to start things out. We should be issuing more details in by the beginning of March.

PROPOSAL: Where can our readers find out more?

MH: You can find our site at LoudDJs.com, which is a website that we proudly designed ourselves and keep very up to date.

PROPOSAL: Well, good luck with the new “office”! Before we let you go, do you have any other advice for brides and grooms that will impact their big day?

MH: The biggest piece of advice I can give to clients is to ask questions to people that work in the industry. Vendors, including us DJs, work day in and day out on special events and weddings. Talk is cheap and asking a few questions to an experienced professional could save you lots of time and maybe even some cash.

Other than that, relax. It’s a big day, so get ready to enjoy it!

Well said, Mathew. And thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions!

Pro Q&A Series: Zipora McDougald

By Tia Ayers
zipora

Zipora McDougald

After years of planning events for friends and family, Zipora McDougald turned pro and became a Wedding Consultant. She’s been a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants for five years, and along with her sister, co-founded Here Comes the Makeup, a cosmetics line specifically designed for brides.

We sat down with Zipora to get advice for brides (and their mothers), find out more about her makeup line and get the scoop on her own wedding day.

PROPOSAL: In your opinion, what is the biggest issue that Brides face when planning their own wedding and how do consultants like you help them along during the process?

ZM: Brides typically don’t realize how many things there are to do for a wedding. Although most magazines and online tools provide checklists. It becomes very stressful for women trying to juggle careers, planning and social lives.

Professionals in my field are instrumental in having a seamless event. Not only that, but a wedding planner helps immensely in getting you the best deals for your money. Wedding planners often have vendors they know and love to use, so they have the connections that brides probably don’t have. I think most brides would agree that having a planner is a must!

PROPOSAL: What would it be helpful for a bride to know before she comes in to consult with you?

ZM: Typically, the bride should have in mind the style of wedding she wants, whether she wants a day or evening wedding, how many guests she wants and some kind of a budget in mind.

A bride should take the time to sit down and think about what she really wants and what she really doesn’t want on your wedding day.

Most of the brides I’ve worked with come in with pictures of what they love and I try to match it to the best of my ability. I give them options, and will brainstorm new ideas with them to make sure the day is exactly how they picture it.

PROPOSAL: How do you face a bride who has turned in to her Altar Ego (aka the worst version of herself)?

ZM: I have been lucky to have worked with really great brides, none of which turned crazy on me….Knock on wood! I actually seem to have more Momzillas than anything else. Of course the moms want their daughters’ wedding day to be exactly how they envisioned it. But what they want and what their daughters have planned are often very different.

I make sure to have everything that the bride wants in writing and also who is in charge of what and where everything goes. That way, when questions arise from the mothers, I can just calmly show them and explain that this is how her daughter wants her big day and that I wouldn’t want to do anything against her wishes.

PROPOSAL: What piece of advice do you give a Maid of Honor on helping the bride have the best day ever?

ZM: For the Maid of Honor: listen to the bride. You need to make sure she is relaxed, so try to take on what you can for her. Understand that she is about to have a life-changing event and along with that, comes stress and frustration.

Since you were picked as the Maid of Honor, I would also suggest giving the bride ideas and suggestions since you probably know her best. Just make sure not to overstep your boundaries and make it about how you would want your wedding day.

zipora01PROPOSAL: Okay, let’s talk about Here Comes the Makeup. How did you come up with the company?

ZM: Here Comes the Makeup was named after the “Here Comes the Bride” song that we all know. I thought it would be a great name to start a cosmetics line within the wedding industry.

My sister, Erica Herrel, is one of the top West Coast cosmetic chemists. She works daily with celebrity lines as well as many products that most of us women use.

I was able to work with her in developing my vision for high end products that actually do what they say they are going to do… work. I am very happy with the finished line.

www.herecomesthemakeup.com

www.herecomesthemakeup.com

PROPOSAL: What products are included in your line?

ZM: Here Comes the Makeup offers a full range of products to get you ready for a big event. We have several products that target nearly every area of the skin, from the eyelashes to lips. We have exfoliating treatments, a three-step tanning system and even a product to relax wrinkles and tone the skin.

Another exciting feature that Here Comes the Makeup has is that I can customize different products for any of my clients.

Because of my sister’s experience, with a special request from the customer, we can make sure that they get what they want so that they look her best.

I also create gift baskets for either the bride or bridal party with our products that are sure to be a hit!

PROPOSAL: What a great idea. Where are your products available?

ZM: You can get the products on our website at: www.herecomesthemakeup.com. I currently take order by email at mszbilu@aol.com. All of the orders are fulfilled as they come in to ensure the freshness of the product.

The McDougalds on their wedding day.

PROPOSAL: Okay, so we’ve talked about your work. Let’s change gears. Are you married?

ZM: Yes, I got married on April 22, 2006.

PROPOSAL: Tell us about your proposal.

ZM: My husband proposed to me on my 28th birthday on a sunset dinner cruise in Maui in front of about 100 people. Those who know him thought I was lying about the way he asked because he’s normally a quiet guy. It was definitely a surprise and a wonderful way to spend my birthday.

PROPOSAL: Tell us about your wedding.

ZM: My wedding day was one of the best days of my life. I got married in Calabasas, California at the Calabasas Inn. I came in on a white horse-drawn carriage, had a gorgeous ivory wedding dress, a handsome man awaiting my arrival and all my friends and family to join me in my celebration.

PROPOSAL: Did having a background in the wedding industry make it easier to plan your own wedding?

ZM: It made it easier, but in a way it also made it harder. I am an extremely picky person and wanted everything perfect. What bride doesn’t?

I had my florist do my centerpieces four times until I absolutely fell in love (I chose ivory long-stemmed tulips bunches in a large cylinder glass vase). I also couldn’t just have any ordinary favors. I had laser-engraved mini merlot wine bottles. The list goes on and on.

I learned that staying on a budget is very difficult when every magazine and website has something that you want. I realized that even though I couldn’t have it all, that I would have my top five favorite things. It was all about compromise for me.

PROPOSAL: That’s a great learning experience that you can pass on to brides. Do you have any other closing thoughts for our readers?

ZM: Don’t take on every task, thinking you will get it done better than the next person and remember that your wedding day is about you and your significant other. Whatever happens during the big day that was unplanned will most likely go unnoticed by everyone else, so just enjoy your time.
