Laura Inglass & Almanzo Wilder

A young Laura Ingalls met homesteader Almanzo Wilder when he and his brother Royal first arrived in the Dakota Territory. Ingalls and her sisters admired his horses since they were the fastest, and because Wilder would always race them through the streets. Ingalls and Wilder had several occasions, including church and socials, that allowed them to become acquainted with one another. Yet the time in which they became closest was during the winter of 1885, at around the same time Ingalls began teaching in one-room schools in a new settlement about 12 miles from DeSmet. She realized she wouldn’t be able to see her family, so Wilder offered to take her home on Fridays, and to bring her back on Sundays. In other words, their happy courtship took place in rides on buggy and sleigh.

Once they decided to marry, they chose to keep it simple. Wilder’s sister, however, threatened to  make plans for an enormous wedding. The couple decided to rush over to Reverend Edward Brown’s home and have a small ceremony there. Wilder wore a new black dress that her mother made for her. No wedding song was played during the ceremony. Afterward, the wedding dinner took place at Ingalls’ parents’ home.

Ingalls would later write numerous books about her adventures during her childhood and her marriage to Wilder, the Little House on the Prairie books. They would receive much critical acclaim and many fans, and eventually spawn a TV show in the 1970s.
