Chevy & Jayni Chase

Today in wedding history SNL alum Chevy Chase married his sweetheart Jayni Chase. The two have three daughters and currently reside in New York.

Family man Chevy has been quoted as saying, “Once I got married and had kids, I moved away from romantic roles, because it seemed wrong to have my three-year-old wondering why Daddy was kissing someone else.”

Family man Chevy may be known for his funny antics and over all screwball persona but his wife Jayni has a much more serious career. She is an entrepreneur & founder of the Center for Environmental Education.

Martin Luther King Jr. & Coretta Scott

On this day in 1953, famed civil rights activists Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott were married. They were introduced to each other through friend Mary Powell. Scott, however, was more preoccupied with her own music career than with marriage, and was wary of marrying a Baptist minister. It is said that she wasn’t impressed with his height during their initial meeting (he stood at 5’7″), but once he began to talk, he “grew in stature.” Because of his intellect and sophistication, he grew on her, and King assured her that she had “everything I have ever wanted in a wife.”

After he proposed, she decided to think it through…for six months. Eventually, she accepted. The couple married at the home of the bride’s family near Marion, Alabama. With 350 guests, it was the biggest wedding anyone in the area had ever seen. King’s father, who presided over the ceremony, was shocked at Scott’s request to remove the promise to obey her husband from the wedding vows, as she was adamant about remaining her own woman. He reluctantly agreed.

The couple had four children, and remained together until King’s death in 1968.

Robert DeNiro & Grace Hightower

Thirteen years ago, Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower joined together in holy matrimony. The affair took place at their upstate New York estate in Marbletown. Among the guests were Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci.

Before their marriage, the couple facede public scrutiny for their relationship. After all, he’s an Oscar-winning actor and she’s a former flight attendant. Skeptics wondered how they could have anything in common?

In fact, a gossip columnist for the New York Daily News didn’t believe they were really engaged despite the fact that Hightower was wearing a ring.

Thirteen years and one son later, De Niro and Hightower are certainly sharing the last laugh. Let this couple serve as a lesson to anyone who thinks that just because people’s backgrounds seem different that they don’t belong with one another.

We want to wish the couple a very happy anniversary. By following their hearts, they’ve shown their courage. But, then again, based on the professions they’ve held, we already knew your were fearless. Together, you seem unstoppable. Cheers!

Silvia Plath & Ted Hughes

Sylvia Plath met Ted Hughes at a party in 1956 while studying at Cambridge in England. Though she was intensely attracted to him, the relationship between them was intense and fiery right from that first night: Hughes ripped off Plath’s red hairband scarf and silver earrings, and as he tried to kiss her neck she bit his cheek and left him bleeding. She wrote a poem about the encounter called “Pursuit”, about a woman pursued by a panther, in response to Hughes’ poem, “The Jaguar”. She spent the night with Hughes in his London flat before her spring European trip, and before long, they were discussing marriage.

They kept the marriage a secret because Plath feared it would affect her academic career and that she’d lose her fellowship grant. They married while her mother was visiting at the Church of Saint George the Martyr in London. Plath wore a pink suit and carried a pink rose which was given to her by Hughes down the aisle.

While their relationship remained turbulent, and after the couple divorced in 1962 due to Hughes’ infidelity, Plath wrote some of her greatest works during that time as a way to cope, including “Ariel”, “Lady Lazarus”, and “Daddy”.

Peggy Fleming & Greg Jenkins

Shortly before winning an Olympic gold medal in figure skating in 1968, Peggy Fleming got engaged to a young man named Greg Jenkins. She met Jenkins (a former ice dancer) when she was in Switzerland for the World Championships in 1965. Not only did she win her first world championship title, she also found herself in love.

Five years later, Fleming and Jenkins tied the knot in front of 350 guests near her home in Bel Air, California and eventually settled down in Los Gatos, California.

Fleming continued to skate professionally and Jenkins became a doctor of dermatology. They went onto have two sons.

Early on in their marriage, Fleming told a reporter that Jenkins is “number one in my life.” After 40 years of togetherness, this attitude hasn’t changed.

They even own and operate a vineyard and winery in Northern California. Much of the profits from their sales goes towards charities that help support breast cancer (which Fleming was diagnosed with and successfully treated for in 1998).

In celebration of their 40 years of marriage and 45 years of togetherness, we toast this inspiring couple!

Cheers!

Courteney Cox & David Arquette

Today in wedding history actress Courteney Cox married actor David Arquette. The two met while filming Scream in 1996 and quickly hit it off.

Courteney may be known for her funny antics on the TV show Friends and for her stellar good looks, but what some might not know is that this talented woman is all around tough. Before their nuptials, David was known as a wild man, and Courteney didn’t want to take any chances.

She demanded her future husband clean up his act and he did! Courteney told Matt Lauer in 2004, “I would not be good with someone who did drugs. As long as I know something, I can deal with anything. I’m really good. But what I’m not good with is inconsistency. And I’m not good with not knowing.”

The two married at Grace Cathedral in San Fransisco with 250 guests in attendance. Courteney & David certainly have style which they showed off in their Valentino designed attire. The entire event was effortlessly put together demonstrating the couple’s unique personality. There were even Lucy & Desi impersonators at the reception!

They currently reside in Southern California with their daughter Coco (who turns 6 years old tomorrow!!!).

Congratulations Courteney & David! Your love & strength as a couple is one we all can look up to and learn from!

Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Jarecki

Happy fifth anniversary to actress Alicia Silverstone and her musician husband Christopher Jarecki. The couple met outside of a movie theater in 1997 and soon began dating. In 2004, he proposed to her with his grandmother’s engagement ring.

“He was waiting on our old wicker love seat, ring in hand, with the most beautiful proposal any best friend could ever give,” Silverstone told a reporter.

Silverstone and Jarecki made it official during a beach ceremony at Lake Tahoe in 2005. The vegan couple had a “green” wedding from the recycled wedding invitations to the organic candles and bamboo chairs. Late into the night, the couple and their guests sang Beatles songs around a campfire while they snacked on vegan burgers.

Five years later and the couple is still going strong and kids seem to be in their future. In a recent interview, Silverstone revealed in a recent interview that she can’t wait to become a mother and she hopes to get pregnant this year.
