Billy Wilder & Audrey Young

Not much is known about this famous director and the former actress and singer. What is known is that Billy Wilder and Audrey Young met on the set of the 1945 film The Lost Weekend, in which Young played a bit-part as a hat-check girl.

She had been entirely cut out of the film–well, almost. Her arm was the only thing left onscreen, the arm that handed actor Ray Milland his hat.

“I only saw the arm, and I fell in love with the arm,” Wilder stated as he recalled the editing process.

Wilder began an affair with Young while still married to his first wife, Judith Iribe. During that time Young was still living with her parents in the La Brea area in Los Angeles.

Wilder would tell her, “I would worship the ground you walk on, Audrey, if only you lived in a better neighbourhood.”

The couple married in 1949 and remained together until Wilder’s death in 2002. Though he had a daughter from his marriage to Iribe, he and Young had no children.

June 29, 1956

Marilyn Monroe & Arthur Miller

They are what some called “the Egghead and the Hourglass.” Some even believed that the pairing seemed a bit odd. Regardless of what anyone said, actress Marilyn Monroe and playwright Arthur Miller married on June 29th, 1956. Before that, the couple had to endure months of chaos caused by the press, curious as to when they would marry. Due to various circumstances, the couple never revealed a date. Instead, they married in secret.

The civil ceremony took place in White Plains, New York in the Westchester County Courthouse, and were married by Judge Seymour Robinowitz. It lasted less than five minutes. Monroe wore a sweater and a skirt, while Miller wore a blue suit and white shirt, no tie. Guests included Miller’s cousins, his lawyer and the lawyer’s wife, and Monroe’s business associate.

The actual wedding, a Jewish ceremony, occurred two days later at the home of Miller’s agent. Lee Strasberg gave the bride away. A reception was later held, which 25 close friends and associates of the couple attended.

Unfortunately, the marriage turned out to be a turbulent one, and was beyond repair when the 1961 film The Misfits premiered, written by Miller. They divorced, and the year after Monroe met her untimely death.

Today in wedding history, President Harry Truman married his sweetheart Bess Wallace. Harry met Bessie (as she was called way back when) when they were in Sunday School. They remained in the same classes from 5th grade all through high school. Harry spoke of his young love as having “the most beautiful blue eyes.”

After Harry entered the military he was going to be sent to France to fight in World War II, but before the young soldier could leave he proposed to Bess. They married as soon as he returned and five years later they had their daughter Mary.

Harry didn’t become President of the United States for another 20 years but through it all he & Bess remained the loyal couple they started as oh, so many years ago. Here’s to you Harry & Bess!

Kendra Wilkinson & Hank Baskett

Model & Reality Star Kendra Wilkinson surprised the media when she announced her engagement to football player Hank Baskett & she created even more of a stir when she added that she & Hank were expecting their first baby due that same Christmas!

Kendra met Hank while they both attended the Playboy Golf Scramble in 2008. Though they kept their love private at the time (Kendra was dating the famous Hugh Hefner) it wasn’t long before Kendra decided it was time to leave the Playboy Mansion and begin a new chapter of her life.

Actress Nicole Kidman met her hubby, country singer Keith Urban in 2005 while they were both attending an event honoring Australians. After a year of dating the two married on June 25, 2006 at Manly in Sydney in the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel at St. Patrick’s Estate.

They may have been prepping for a formal ceremony & reception but that didn’t stop them from sending a 24 pack of Victoria Bitter beer to the paparazzi parked outside her home with the note, “Enjoy! Nicole & Keith.”.  For the wedding, Nicole wore a gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga and she arrived to the Church in a white Rolls Royce!

The beautiful red head has told reporters that she has a rule that she does not spend more than three days away from her family. Though this may prove difficult while maintaining successful careers, Nicole & Keith have shown the world that their family comes first and they are certainly setting a good example to their daughter Sunday Rose born in 2006, and Connor & Isabella (Nicole’s children from a previous marriage). Congratulations to Nicole & Keith!!!

Marcia Cross & Tom Mahoney

Today in wedding history we look back at 2006, when television star, Marcia Cross married stockbroker, Tom Mahoney.

The couple, who began dating in 2005, were married in front of 200 guests at the Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church in San Gabriel, CA.

“I didn’t want it to go by in a blur… My eyes were trying to drink in all my family and my new family and friends,” Cross told People Magazine.

Although the wedding was fairly traditional, the couple tried something a little different during the reception at the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena.

Rather than subject the single girls to the potential bouquet toss catfight, the couple invited all the married couples to the dance floor. Then, they started eliminating couples to determine who had been married the longest. That couple received the bridal bouquet.

It’s something right out of the playbook of Bree Van de Kamp, Cross’ alter ego on “Desperate Housewives” and we hope more couples will incorporate this touching tradition into their ceremonies.

Denman. Denman. Denman.  We’re talking Alexandra Denman who married the multi-talented Ben Stein in 1968 and again in 1977 after a three-year break.

Alexandra is an entertainment industry attorney and Ben is well known for, well, just about everything from attorney to game-show host to  author to actor. In fact, Ben’s roll-call scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the most well-known scenes in film history.

This incredibly interesting couple have one son, Tommy, as well as six cats and three large dogs.

Funnyman Adam Sandler met Jackie Titone after she acted alongside his good friend Rob Schneider in the film Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalow. Jackie, a former model, impressed Rob, and he recommended that she work with Adam. He cast her in his film Big Daddy & again in Little Nicky. A relationship began to grow and in 2003 the couple married at the private home of Dick Clark in Malibu, California.

Jackie wore an exquisite gown by Caroline Herrera & he wore a black Armani suit. They were accompanied by his dog Meatball, a bulldog, who carried the platinum rings in true ring bearer fashion.

The reception included arcade games and a song performed by the groom!

This happy couple currently reside in Los Angeles with their two daughters Sunny & Sadie. Congratulations from everyone at Proposal!!!!!

Colin Firth & Livia Giuggioli

Colin Firth may be a terrific actor of stage & screen, but his most successful moment on the set of a film is when he met Livia Giuggioli.  The talented Italian beauty was a production assistant on the film Nostromo when she met future husband Colin! The two dated for a year before marrying in 1997.

Livia has since gone on to produce & direct feature films and of course Colin’s career has flourished playing leading roles in several different genres. The couple have two children as well as a son from Colin’s previous marriage.
