Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall

Lauren Bacall was only nineteen when she met Humphrey Bogart on the set of their film To Have and Have Not. The film was Lauren’s first and Humphrey, then forty-five, acted as her mentor throughout filming.

Though he was married, they began a relationship. What started as an innocent friendship, soon led to exchanges of love letters and eventually the two began a secret romance.

After Bogart’s divorce the two married & honeymooned at Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio.

In her autobiography By Myself & Then Some, Lauren wrote about her wedding day, “When I reached Bogie, he took my hand – the enormous, beautiful white orchids I was holding were shaking themselves to pieces; as I stood there, there wasn’t a particle of me that wasn’t moving visibly…As I glanced at Bogie, I saw tears streaming down his face – his ‘I do’ was strong and clear, though. As Judge Shettler said, “I now pronounce you man & wife,’ Bogie and I turned toward each other – he leaned to kiss me – I shyly turned my cheek – all those eyes watching made me very self-conscious. He said, ‘Hello, Baby’. I hugged him and was reported to have said, “Oh, goody.’ Hard to believe, but maybe I did.”

Together they had two children, Leslie & Stephen. The two were married until his death in 1957.

Okay… so technically their anniversary was yesterday (May 19th) but this amazing couple is just too good to pass up! Sarah Jessica Parker & her hubby Matthew Broderick have literally mastered their craft as actors and shown their work on the big screen, the silver screen and on the great Broadway.

SJP & Mr. Broderick met while both acting in the Naked Angels Theater Company. They married on May 19, 1997 in a synagogue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Matthew’s sister Janet, a minister presided over the ceremony.

This power couple make a sneaky pair because their guests arrived expecting a party and soon found out that they were attending a wedding!

They currently live in New York City with their three children.

Congratulations to 13 years of commitment! We hope the happy couple were able to have a great day off!!!

President Andrew Johnson & Eliza McCardle

Future President Andrew Johnson was only seventeen when he met his future First Lady, sixteen-year-old Eliza McCardle, in 1826. He had just opened his own tailor’s shop in Greenville, Tennessee, and they both took an instant liking to each other. Eight months later, the couple married at the home of McCardle’s mother. Mordecai Lincoln, a distant relative of Abraham Lincoln, presided over the nuptials. Afterwards, they set up housing in the back of the shop and ran the business from there.

It’s true what they say, behind every great man there is a great woman, and this lovely pair was no exception. For a time Johnson felt he was being held back by his lack of a formal education once he became interested in the political discussions of his customers. McCardle patiently tutored him in reading and writing, as well as in better presentation. She even read to him aloud as he worked in the shop. Though McCardle was quiet and remained behind the scenes while Johnson was more outgoing throughout life, it’s safe to say that she helped him develop into the great debater he would be famous for.

John & Cindy McCain

Time to break out the pearl for John and Cindy McCain. Today is the 30th Wedding Anniversary of the Senator and his elegant leading lady.

Meeting at a military reception in Hawaii, John recalls the moment, “She was lovely, intelligent and charming. By the evening’s end, I was in love.”

And who says May-December marriages don’t work?

John said he was younger than he was. Cindy said she was older. They didn’t discover their 17-year age difference until they applied for a marriage certificate. By then it didn’t matter, and it’s been a funny joke between them and their children ever since.

Congratulations, Senator and Mrs. McCain!

David Crosby & Jan Dance

This Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer married longtime lover, Jan Dance in a ceremony at the Hollywood Church of Religious Science twenty-three years ago today.

Not only was Crosby’s daughter at their side for the ceremony — so was another couple!

Former Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young band member Graham Nash and wife, Susan, renewed their vows during the same service.

Their joint reception was held at Nash’s home in Encino where both couples jumped into a pool together fully clothed. We suppose they wanted to show that they had enough faith in their relationships to take the plunge!

Happy 21 years to the couple!

Martina McBride & John McBride

A big congrats to awesome couple, Martina and John McBride. These two were definitely meant for each other.

Twenty-two years ago, Martina Schiff, a struggling artist, rented rehearsal space from sound engineer, John McBride. Four months later they were married. While he worked for major artists like Charlie Daniels and Garth Brooks, John produced Martina’s demo tape and sent it to RCA in a package marked “Material Requested.”  His savvy landed her a record deal, and the rest is history.

Talented, supportive, and three beautiful daughters. Life doesn’t get much sweeter than this!

Antonio Bandaras & Melanie Griffith

Fourteen years ago today, Zorro married the Working Girl. That’s right. Actors, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith tied the knot on May 14, 1996, not long after meeting on the set of the comedy Two Much.

This dynamic couple has a lot to be proud of in our book. Besides raising three children, they have received critical acclaim as actors and for their extensive charity work.

What makes this couple so interesting might just be rooted in their differences.

She grew up in Hollywood. He grew up in a town in Spain. Her parents were famous. His mother was a schoolteacher; his father, a police officer. She was given freedom growing up. He was given discipline. She began her career as a baby in a commercial. He didn’t pursue acting until he his dream of being a professional soccer was crushed due to a broken foot. .

Regardless if it’s the similarities or differences that make this couple tick, it works. Way to go Antonio and Melanie!

Ben Stiller & Christine Taylor

Ben Stiller met Christine Taylor on the set of the TV show Heat Vision and Jack. Oh, you’ve never heard of it? That’s okay, because the show didn’t last very long (there was only a pilot that wasn’t picked up). As you can probably guess, however, Stiller and Taylor’s relationship did. In fact, they are still happily married today ten years later. You can even see them together in films such as Zoolander and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

The couple married at an oceanfront residence on the Hawaiian island of Kauai on May 13th, 2000. Stiller’s famous parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, also attended the ceremony.

Though it’s been ten years, Stiller has stated that the couple won’t renew their wedding vows. “If your relationship is in good shape and you’re communicating with each other and you’re close, then that’s what’s important,” he told OK Magazine. “The vows thing is the vows, but I think it has to be implicit that you meant it the first time.” We couldn’t agree more!

King Richard I & Queen Berengaria of Navarre

King Richard I & Berengaria of Navarre

King Richard I (the Lionheart) of England and Aquitaine was the handsome warrior son of the formidable Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.  By the time he decided to marry Berengaria, eldest daughter of King Sancho of Navarre and Sancha of Castile, he had already lived a full life of rebellion, adventure and scandal – much of which had been orchestrated by his mother Eleanor and his equally cocky siblings.

It was no surprise then that he asked his mother and sister Joan to bring Berengaria to him while he in the Holy Land trying to attain glory in the Third Crusade.

On their way to the Middle East from Europe, the three women’s ship ran aground at Cyprus. The ruler there threatened them but Richard came to the rescue and took Cyprus for himself in the process. The two were then married in 1191AD, in the Chapel of St. George in Limassol and Berengaria was crowned Queen of England and Cyprus. Richard was quickly on the move again and took Berengaria with him. However, at some point they were separated, and Richard was captured on his way home by an Austrian Duke who suspected him of arranging the murder of his cousin.

Berengaria eventually returned to safety and attempted to raise ransom for her husband’s release. After Richard was freed he returned to England solo and then to his kingdom of Aquitaine, in Southwest France, making no attempt to reunite with his wife. After the intervention of the Pope, Richard agreed to take Berengaria to church every week but the two were never close. The marriage was childless and when Richard died in 1199 Berengaria had never been to England, the country where she was Queen.

Berengaria lived another 31 years, settling at Le Mans, one of her dower properties. She led a very pious life and was benefactress to the local Abbey. There is conjecture that she finally did see  England as a widow, but this has never been proven.

Trace Adkins & Rhonda Forlaw

“The first time I saw him, I knew he was going to be a star,” said Rhonda Forlaw of her husband, country singer Trace Adkins, and with good reason. When she met him at a club in 1994, Forlaw was a publicity manager at Arista Records who eventually helped him land a deal with Capitol Nashville. Throughout this time, what had become a friendship had turned into a romance, and Adkins got down on one knee and proposed to Forlaw during his debut at the Grand Ole Opry in November of 1996.

Their wedding was one of the most lavish in Nashville history at the time, which included antique carriages, dinner for 540 guests that included shrimp, prime rib, and chicken, and a song from Adkins called “The Rest of Mine” which he sang for Forlaw.

As of today the couple remains married, and have three daughters in addition to two other daughters from one of Adkins’ previous marriages.
