1. Evelyn Protano & Omar Abdelhamid
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Date: February 13, 2010
Evelyn & Omar
Evelyn writes: Omar and I got engaged the night before Valentine’s Day. For this story to make sense, you need to know that Omar and I have a thing with penguins, which started when he bought me a giant stuffed penguin when I was having a rough time at work. It’s been a running joke ever since.
Anyway, Omar said he didn’t want to wait to exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day, and suggested that we exchange gifts right then. Omar gave me three bags, one small, one medium, and one large. I opened the small bag, and it contained a set of penguin nesting dolls! In the middle of the first set of nesting dolls was a note that said, open bag number 2.
In the second bag, was another set of penguin nesting dolls! At the middle of this set, was a note that said open bag number 3. I opened the third and largest bag, and it contained two giant penguin nesting dolls! Inside the second nesting doll, was a black box with a beautiful ring. He proposed, and I said yes.
2. Jackie Lawinski & Michael Porco
Location: New York City
Date: February, 2010
Jackie writes: Michael and I met in San Diego February 2, 2007. Ironically, we both came from New York, moving 3,000 miles only to find each other! From the moment we met, we were inseparable. After three years of dating, we decided it was time to move back home to be closer to our families. We planned a cross country road trip, taking ten days to drive from San Diego to New York, stopping in various cities along the way. The ultimate goal was to reach New York by February 2nd, our three year anniversary.
The trip didn’t exactly go as planned, or at least what I THOUGHT was the plan. We ended up (I mean, I ended up) running over a metal rod in the road which tore a hole in our gas tank, leaving us stranded in the middle of nowhere for two days. In addition, we chose to drive cross country during one of the biggest snow storms middle America has had for years, causing our trip to be re-routed again and again. And lastly, when we FINALLY made it to New York, what I thought was our three year anniversary dinner, turned out to be something much different, the best night of my life actually…the night he proposed!!
And we caught it all on tape!!! Here is the video he made:
3. Ryan & Alyssa Kavner
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Date: February 7, 2007
Ryan & Alyssa
Ryan writes:
Alyssa has always been a fan of Ellen Degeneres and would tell me how awesome it would be to get engaged on her show. She had applied to get tickets to her show because she was a huge fan. She was not home when they called to tell her she was selected. I had asked the person on the phone what I would have to do to set it up. He had no idea so I had to take matters into my own hands. My friend worked on Desperate Housewives and The Ellen Show was trying to get their cast on the show. Publicity for Desperate Housewives put me in touch with the producers and the ball started rolling.
We happened to get on their Valentine’s Day episode and even when we got out of the car to go in my wife asked jokingly “Do you have the ring?” I thought she was on to me and my friend that was going with us to the show to watch it all go down. To make a long story short, I proposed on The Ellen Show.
My secret deeds were not done. I told her we would go to dinner by the beach and then swing by her parents house to show then the ring. When we showed up to the restaurant I had all her family and friends waiting to surprise her. I then gave her a photo album of our first year together and all the great things we had done.
My surprises were not over…. The next day I told her we were going to help some friends shoot a project by LAX and we had to pick up some equipment at the airport that the show I worked on at the time was lending us. I told her I needed her help and had my friend drive my car and secretly packed her bags in the trunk for a weekend getaway to Maui. We got married in Laguna Beach June 7th, 2008. Below is a link to the actual proposal.
