Marshall & Reiner

Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall have a lot in common. They both starred in hit comedy shows in the 1970s (Reiner, All in the Family; Marshall, Laverne & Shirley), they’re both successful film directors. They even grew up on the same block in New York (until Reiner was 12 and the family moved to California.) And today in 1971, they married each other.

The wedding took place at the home of Reiner’s parents in Beverly Hills. Their garden ceremony culminated with a Chinese food reception. Reiner and Marshall wrote their own vows.

A few years later, when Reiner’s character on All in the Family got married, he wrote the character’s vows as well. At the time, he told a reporter that writing his own vows were easier than writing the ones for the show.

Despite all their commonalities, the marriage didn’t last and the couple divorced in 1979. Since then, they’ve concentrated on their directing careers and have both solidified their place in film.
