F. Scott Fitzgerald & Zelda Sayre
Today in wedding history famous author F. Scott Fitzgerald married his muse Zelda Sayre at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York
City.
The two met at a country club in 1918. After dancing, Zelda was inspired to write the following about their first moment together, “there seemed to be some heavenly support beneath his shoulder blades that lifted his feet from the ground in ecstatic suspension, as if he secretly enjoyed the ability to fly but was walking as a compromise to convention.”
Though they began a passionate romance, shortly after becoming engaged Zelda broke their engagement, urging Scott to find his own success before becoming her husband. This distance fueled his desire for fame and it wasn’t a year before he published his first novel This Side of Paradise (which was highly influenced by Zelda).
Scott & Zelda were married until his death in 1940. Despite the fact that their relationship endured affairs, fights and even years in which Zelda was institutionalized, Scott supported and provided for his wife until his last day and they are known for having a love rich with creativity and passion.
