Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson

You might say that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were destined to be together.  The two actors first met in 1981 on the set of the TV sitcom “Bosom Buddies.” Then four years later, they met again as co-stars of the film “Volunteers.”  Three years later they were married.

Today, as they celebrate their 22th wedding anniversary, Hanks and Wilson are considered one of Hollywood’s great couples. They give marriage a good name. Besides film development and production, the two have taken on many political, social and charitable causes. They support many environmental issues, such as alternative fuel, and actively support same-sex marriage.

Hanks and Wilson have two sons, Chester (Chet) and Truman. Hanks also has two children, Colin and Elizabeth, from a previous marriage. We tip our fanciest hats to Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks!

Jon Bon Jovi & Dorothea Hurley

In 1989, Jon Bon Jovi was the lead singer in one of the biggest rock ‘n’ roll bands in the world. While on tour in Los Angeles, Jon and his high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, took a secret trip to Las Vegas.

It was there, on the steps outside of the Graceland Wedding Chapel that they tied the knot. The couple wore blue jeans and leather jackets and their cab driver was their only witness.

The New Jersey natives now live in New York with their four children and are still very much in love.

In 2007, Jon expressed his love for his wife to a reporter, saying, “I wouldn’t trade her in for anything… She is just a very strong woman.”

We at PROPOSAL wish them a happy anniversary and hope they keep on rocking!

Kiss Your Mate Day!

Even after much research, we were unable to determine the true origin of Kiss Your Mate Day, however, April 28th does hold significance in Rome as the day that spring flowers bloom. So keep the Spring Fever going by showing a little love today!

The top three rules to follow on Kiss Your Mate Day are:

1.) Kiss your mate.

2.) If you don’t have a mate, kiss someone who could potentially become your mate.

3.) Depending on your status, follow steps one or two & repeat. :)

Maria Shriver & Arnold Schwarzenegger

A beautiful girl from one of the richest, most influential families in America falls in love with an Austrian body builder with humble roots, an unpronounceable name, and a thick accent.

The body builder, called “Arnie,” becomes an A-list actor, a savvy investor, and eventually marries the beautiful girl named Maria. They have four incredible children —two boys and two girls. They write books. They give to charities. They know everyone. And, if that isn’t amazing enough, the Austrian born body builder becomes the leader of the one of the largest, most powerful states in the country.

Yes, we’re talking about the real life fairytale known as Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Both Shriver (a Democrat) and Schwarzenegger (a Republican) claim their successful union lies in their differences.  Shriver claims, “I’ve never been bored!”

So, here’s to everyone being lucky enough in finding their perfect opposite and living the American dream.  Congratulations to the Governator and his Leading Lady on their 24th Wedding Anniversary!

Mary Queen of Scots & Francis, the Dauphin of France

Mary Queen of Scots was born a Queen, literally. She was only six days old when her father King James V of Scotland died after the Battle of Soloway Moss on April 10, 1542.  Scotland was a treacherous, barbarous place filled with warring clans and the always-present threat of the English. Because of this, Mary’s mother, the intelligent and extremely tall French woman Marie of Guise, accepted a proposal from the French royal family. Mary would be raised in France and one day become Queen of France while her mother ruled Scotland as regent.

The young Queen was sent to France at the tender age of five and grew up with her future husband Francis and his siblings at the court of Henry II and his wife, the formidable Marie de Medici. By all accounts the weak and awkward Francis worshiped the slightly older, pre-naturally graceful and clever Mary.  Mary adored him in return. By all accounts she had a very happy childhood, surrounded by playmates and coddled by her mother’s powerful family, the Guises.

On April 24th, 1558 the 5’11 Mary and the much shorter Francis were married at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. It was an extremely sumptuous ceremony, with a magnificent banquet and grandiose entertainments.  Mary bucked tradition by wearing a “dress as white as lilies.” White was the traditional color of mourning for Queens of France and one can only feel a tingle of foreboding in this choice, when one considers what fate had in store for the two teenagers.

A year later Henry II died and Francis and Mary were crowned King and Queen of France. Scarcely a year afterwards, in Dec. 1560, Francis himself died of an abscess on the brain. Mary chose to return to rule Scotland (her mother had died many years before) and lived a turbulent and tragic life. She was married twice more and had one son, the future King James VI of Scotland and England. After almost 20 years of imprisonment in England she was executed for plotting the death of her cousin Elizabeth I on Feb. 8, 1587.

Evelyn & Omar

Evelyn writes:
Omar and I got engaged the night before Valentine’s Day. For this story to make sense, you need to know that Omar and I have a thing with penguins, which started when he bought me a giant stuffed penguin when I was having a rough time at work. It’s been a running joke ever since.

Anyway, Omar said he didn’t want to wait to exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day, and suggested that we exchange gifts right then. Omar gave me three bags, one small, one medium, and one large. I opened the small bag, and it contained a set of penguin nesting dolls! In the middle of the first set of nesting dolls was a note that said, open bag number 2.

In the second bag, was another set of penguin nesting dolls! At the middle of this set, was a note that said open bag number 3. I opened the third and largest bag, and it contained two giant penguin nesting dolls! Inside the second nesting doll, was a black box with a beautiful ring. He proposed, and I said yes. :-)
