Surprise Proposal at Proposal Launch Party

You’ve watched their proposal, now read how they got to that moment in time from Gerard himself:

Kati & Gerard, moments after getting engaged.

Kati and I met at work. After some downsizing we were put in the same cubicle pod. One day, she had a step stool by her desk and asked me a question. To answer her question I decided to stand on the step stool, because obviously it was there for me to pontificate from.

Well, after much pontificating and her being really annoyed by me, she was frustrated with being on probation. We and another co-worker kept talking all the way to the parking lot. Then the co-worker left and Kati and I kept talking near her car, then in her car.

I was suppose to go to a family party in Oxnard, but they were already eating and I also wanted to see a “Gardening Not Architecture” house show in North Hollywood.

I more or less forced her to go with me. When she drove me back to my car in the parking lot, we stopped to watch the Station Fire, which was burning in the distance on two fronts.

We said “Good Night” about 2AM.

A couple days later, we hung out in a strip mall parking lot till midnight. Then I invited her to the farmer’s market and we’ve been together ever since.

I was in love with her pretty quickly and we talked about marriage within a month of being together – though it freaked her out.

We celebrated Christmas Day with my family then drove to Oregon to celebrate with her family. On New Year’s, just after midnight, I asked Kati’s mom for permission to propose to Kati.

I bought the ring in late January and thought about the best time to propose. Valentine’s Day was cheesy, other things didn’t fit, but Proposal Magazine’s Launch Party seemed ideal. And it was.

I wanted there to be an element of surprise, though Kati stipulated that it get caught on tape, so I couldn’t just do it at random. A Big crowd really isn’t our scene and strangers are a bit overwhelming, so I was nervous that the party might be a bit much. Yet it was time to propose, so I mustered the courage and dropped to my knee.

The surprise (or shock) value was quite high, which made me happy, though not as much as having Kati become my fiancée and soon my wife.
