Pro Q&A Series: Simply U Events & Proposals

By Shannon Ayers

Today we were lucky enough to talk with the ladies behind Simply U Events & Proposals: Heather Vaughn, Lead Director & Kendall Holiday, Business Relations Director. These girls have taken the wedding industry head on. Not only have they mastered the difficult role of wedding consultant but they have also created an entirely new branch of the business: wedding proposal consulting.

Combining Heather’s education from the University of Colorado’s Journalism School in Advertising, and Kendall’s degree in Communications with a Human Relations emphasis from Texas Christian University (not to mention both girls’ experience working in the world of catering & event coordinating), it’s no wonder these girls have created a new art form when it comes to popping the question!

PROPOSAL: What is your background in the field of weddings and proposals?

HV: All of our Simply U Events and Proposals consultants started in the wedding planning industry before

Heather Vaughn

Heather Vaughn

branching off into marriage proposal planning. I did multiple internships related to the wedding/events industry throughout college. After I graduated from the University of Colorado, I took a catering manager position at Dove Canyon Country Club in Southern California. That experience gave me the confidence and resources to branch off on my own, which is exactly what I had always wanted to do, and Simply U Events and Proposals was born. Finding experience in the wedding planning industry is one thing, but the proposal planning business was unexplored. It turned into a lot of research.  I needed to find out whether or not marriage proposal help would be useful to gentlemen. I realized men wanted to be romantic and creative with their proposals, but didn’t always know how to be, so I created different proposal packages. Our proposal business has been a hands-on learning experience through clients.

PROPOSAL: What is your business and where is it located?

HV: Simply U Events and Proposals is a wedding and marriage proposal planning company. We are a team of wedding coordinators for brides-to-be and female marriage proposal consultants for “nearly engaged” gentleman. We have different proposal packages just as we have various wedding packages depending on what each client needs. Many don’t even know what a proposal consultant means; we assist men with personalizing their proposal ideas (they fill out our relationship questionnaire and we create at least two personalized proposal ideas) and/or plan any details needed for their perfect proposal (researching and booking vendors).  The way we see it is, if brides hire wedding planners for their day, then a man should be able to consult a female for a personalized proposal idea.

Our home offices are located in Northern and Southern California. I recently moved to Solano County with my husband, but Kendall still works in Orange County.  However, we help with proposals all over the country.

PROPOSAL: How did you come up with your business?

HV: Since high school, we’ve had a love and passion for wedding planning and the dream of starting our own event planning company.  The proposal planning idea came later. Originally a friend and I were chatting about how fun it would be to help with proposals. Then I starting listening to women tell their proposal stories, sensing some disappointment in the lack of thoughtfulness, and listened to gentlemen explain how hard it was to think of something romantic and creative.

PROPOSAL: When did you start your company?

HV: January of 2009

PROPOSAL: How can our readers contact you?

HV: Readers can visit us on our website www.simplyuevents.com and our blog www.lovetheyesgirls.com.  They can also email us directly at heather@simplyuevents.com or kendall@simplyuevents.com

PROPOSAL: What would it be helpful for a person to know before they come in to consult with you?

HV: Our goal is to help them create a personal and memorable occasion whether it’s for their wedding or engagement. Knowing the budget they prefer to stay within is definitely helpful. We are there to customize packages to their needs so essentially we will figure out the rest together.

KH: Even though we put the final details on the proposals, it is very helpful when the guys give us a lot of

Kendall Holiday

Kendall Holiday

information about their girlfriend, or have a few things in mind.  Of course, they don’t have to have the whole idea, just maybe one or two things he knows she for sure wants or for sure doesn’t want!

PROPOSAL: Can you give any advice on making a proposal special?

HV: Personalize, Personalize, Personalize! Spend time going down memory lane, finding unique characteristics about your relationship and use those. Tune into little things she loves (favorite vacation spot, gift from you, flower, book, etc) that you can include in your proposal. The extra touches of thoughtfulness are priceless. It never hurts to get another female’s opinion too.

In our experience, we found our proposal services to be effective because we customize the proposal to each couple. No proposal is alike because no other couple has shared the same memories, has the same loves, personalities, etc. We found that using our relationship questionnaire to gather significant details about the couple is key to creating their perfect proposal.

PROPOSAL: How do you assess on what would be the best proposal for a couple?

HV: We first start with clients filling out the questionnaire.  We find out the necessary details about her personality, his personality, and them as a couple. According to his answers, we each brainstorm proposal ideas. Then we share our ideas in a brainstorming session so we can create the best two or three proposal ideas for that couple. Many times, the proposals are a combination of different consultants’  ideas.  Knock on wood, but so far we’ve only received positive feedback!

KH: It really helps because anytime we all go through the questionnaires we write down words that pop out to us or seem very important. When we come together, we see what words, places or ideas we all have written down. We know that if all of us felt that was important, and it stuck out to us, that it needs to be a part of the proposal!

PROPOSAL: Obviously, your clientele is mostly men. But have you consulted women?

HV: No. We’ve never had a woman ask for proposal help.

PROPOSAL: Are you married/engaged?

HV: Yes, I am married.

KH: Not married, but close to being engaged. My boyfriend always gets the question, “Do you feel a lot of pressure ‘cause of your girlfriend’s business?” He laughs and says he feels pretty confident. I am excited to see what he decides, but trust me I have definitely dropped a few hints. How could I not?

PROPOSAL: If so, can you share with us your proposal story?

HV: My husband is in the Air Force, so he wasn’t able to leave pilot training in Mississippi which made things a little challenging. I flew out to visit Kyle for a few weeks and he planned a trip for us to visit a mutual friend near the beach in Florida (it was driving distance from where he lived). We stayed at this beautiful resort on the water. One night after we went out to dinner, he proposed to me in a remote spot on the beach. The summer we started dating, we spent ALL our time at the beach (we’re both from Southern Ca) so it was significant to us. He knows me so well though, because he knew I would want to go back and get the camera. When I walked into the room it was decked out with my favorite flowers, favorite champagne, favorite dessert, candles, etc. The camera was sitting there ready to go. It was beautiful. He even planned a day of jet skiing to continue celebrating the following day. The best part is, when he actually got down on his knee to propose I thought he was joking. Throughout the weekend, he would “fake” the proposal pose. For example, go down to tie his shoe and look up at me.  He had to show me the ring so I knew he was actually proposing. That was such a Kyle thing to do which made it even more memorable.

Heather's wedding party. (Kendall is on her left!)

PROPOSAL: What was your wedding like?

HV: We got married outdoors, up by a ski lodge in Park City, Utah. My family has a place there for skiing and we just love it. The reception was inside the Empire Canyon Lodge. I think it was gorgeous! I chose white, ivories and champagne bridesmaid dresses for a classic, yet chic style. I played off the aspen trees, nature, to bring in natural elegance for the ceremony. It was one of the few times I saw Kyle cry! He is going to kill me for saying that. We brought in a little more color into the reception (blush pinks and yellows) but it was very subtle. The day was so full of love and support from our family and close friends that it was better than I imagined. I had so much fun!

Thank you, Heather & Kendall for taking the time to answer our questions!

Homeschooled Hostess: A Website is Celebrated!

By Shannon Ayers

As far as the world-wide web is concerned, Proposal Magazine, is just a baby. Because we are growing up quick, and making friends :) it was time to thank those friends that have been instrumental in getting us off the ground. What better way to thank them than with a Launch Party!!! As Proposal’s signature hostess, I was fortunate enough to take charge over a few of the tasks for this shin-dig.

Task 1: The cake! Of course, because I’d never baked a coconut cake, I decided to bake this particular dessert for the first time… the day of the event! Why would I do such a thing? Because I love a good challenge. For the record, I didn’t wake up that morning and decide; I had my recipe planned, my

Coconut Cake

My Challenge: the Coconut Cake

ingredients purchased and my pans/ equipment ready!

I’m not posting the recipe because it was not an original, however, I will give you a few quick tips: you most likely don’t need as much Coconut Flakes as you think; recipes with Creme of Coconut tend to taste better and bake more consistent than those with Coconut Milk & if possible purchase Natural Coconut Extract. I used imitation coconut flavor because that is all my local store had; although this tasted nice, it was a bit strong and I’ve heard that natural coconut tends to be a little more subtle and have an overall more appealing taste.

Task 2: The flowers! It was important to me that we were able to have flowers at our event, because, they really do brighten up a space. The best thing about our Launch Party being on the small side was that we could pay close attention to detail on the centerpieces we created and we didn’t have to purchase too many flowers!

Rosemary Spark's creativity in flowers.

Rosemary Spark's creativity in flowers.

My right hand lady Rosemary Sparks created these absolutely beautiful arrangements using grocery store bouquets. I repeat, GROCERY STORE BOUQUETS! No paying per stem, no high prices. This is remarkably simple because the flowers are already bundled for you, all we had to do was pick the color palette that we needed and Rosemary worked her magic at the event location. Rosemary took three grocery bouquets and opened them all up, getting rid of the greenery the stores use as filler and focusing just on the flowers she had on hand.

Of course, in planning any occasion there was much more that went into it than just cake & flowers, but for the sake of not boring anyone, I’ll end here…and give you more details later!

Thanks for reading :) & thanks again to Rosemary who really is such a creative lady!

Happy Hostessing!!!

Grace’s Tip of the Day: TMI

Ladies don’t talk about your sex life in public. That’s why sleepovers were created! In this case, Modesty is the best Policy.

Okay, so we understand…you are with your girl friends and you want to talk. Just remember, think before you speak. At a small restaurant…not the best idea. Think twice before talking about your toys and method of birth control. Your girl friends won’t mind hearing it but think about the people at the next table. And don’t think talking on your cell is keeping it discreet: we can hear you!

Paul Rudd and Julie Yaeger

The Rudds

The Rudds

What is a great way of starting a relationship? Why, by moving in of course!

That’s how Paul Rudd’s relationship with Julie Yaeger began. Rudd was visiting New York City in 1995 in order to promote his new film Clueless. After Rudd and Yaeger met, he ended up sleeping over at Yaeger’s place, and never left.

“My best friend is my wife, of course,” said Rudd. “I [had] ended up staying at her apartment, and that led to my living there. We didn’t date. I just moved in.”

After several years of togetherness, the couple married on February 23rd 2003 in a quiet ceremony in upstate New York.

Week 4: Pick the Perfect Proposal

By Shannon Ayers

Last week, Bobby & April became our new champions. Will they win again this week or will a new couple emerge victorious? You decide!
Remember you can vote once a day. The poll closes at 12:05 am PST on Friday!

1. Bobby Black & April Price
Location: The canals of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Date: Friday, November 27, 2009

April & Bobby

April & Bobby

Bobby writes:
Each November, my company HIGH TIMES hosts The Cannabis Cup—the world’s biggest marijuana festival in Amsterdam. It was here, on Thanksgiving Day 2006, that I met the love of my life, April Price.

Since she was from Phoenix and I from New York, we spent the next year flying across the country to see each other—often at other pot-themed events. In August 2007, we embarked on a two-week desert odyssey—camping in Sedona and the Grand Canyon, a week at Burning Man, and a hot-tub weekend in Vegas. By the end of the trip, I knew she was my soul mate and asked her to move in with me. In May 2008, she packed up her belongings and we drove cross-country together. She’s been with me ever since.

This November, we returned to Amsterdam for our fourth Cannabis Cup together. It was there, on a candlelight canal cruise in the City of Diamonds, that I dropped to my knee and asked her to be my wife. Tearfully, she replied, “I would be honored!” After the cruise, I brought her to our favorite pot-friendly bar Barney’s Uptown, where our friends were waiting to toast us with weed, hashish, and champagne.

2. Brad Stevens & Summer Herrick
Location: Cabazon, California
Date: December 2008

Summer & Brad

Summer & Brad

Brad writes:
The first conversation I had with my fiancé Summer centered on Pee-Wee Herman – namely, our fond memories of the movie “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” Normally, I am a never-ending fount of cynicism, but right then and there I knew – after trading bits of movie dialogue with this beautiful, sweet, and funny girl – that I had met the woman I was going to marry. Say it with me now: “Awwwww.”

In the film, Pee-Wee pursues his beloved bicycle across the country, making a stopover near a pair of concrete dinosaur statues. These weren’t mere props; the dinosaurs were originally built to lure motorists to a roadside diner, and they’re still there, although now the unlikely centerpiece to a creationism museum.

Undaunted by the fact that Pee-Wee’s dinosaurs had been co-opted by anti-evolution kooks (and also undeterred that Dinny the Dinosaur and Mr. Rex now overlook a lovely Burger King parking lot), I chose this spot to propose to Summer. I was nervous enough to mess up my only line, sputtering, “I’m going to ask you to marry… you… now.” Summer smiled through happy tears and said yes – she has always known what I’ve meant, even when I can’t quite nail the phrasing.

There may be no basement at the Alamo, but you can have two concrete dinosaurs witness your marriage proposal. And you can turn a fast food parking lot into the most romantic spot on Earth. I will be forever in your debt, Mr. Herman.

3. Laura Clontz & Wesley Hargrove
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Date: November 25, 2009

Wesley & Laura

Laura writes:
Wesley and I have known of each other since elementary school. He was in love with my best friend in fifth grade.

We “went out” in eighth grade for a month or so. Different middle schools was so rough, and it didn’t last. In high school, we became great friends and started dating again sophomore year. When it was time for college, I stayed in our hometown, and he went off to Santa Barbara, California, where he’s been most of the year for the last four years. Even with the long distance, we knew that we were perfect. In total, we will have been together for six years this March.

In November, I came to visit from Texas for Thanksgiving and Wesley’s birthday. He took me to a beach that we often visited during the summer we lived in Santa Barbara, with cliffs overlooking the beach and the ocean. It was sunset, which is our favorite time of day. As we sat and talked on the cliffs, Wesley said he wanted to go down to the beach. We both stood up, but instead of walking down the cliffs, he knelt down, took the ring out of his pocket, and asked me to marry him.

I said yes, and he told me that the people behind us with cameras were his friends taking pictures of us, so we now have pictures from the actual proposal! We spent the rest of the night on the phone with family and friends!

We’re now planning our marriage on October 23, 2010 here in Texas. And even though we’re still 1600+ miles apart, we know that there is nothing else that we would rather be doing. This is love.

Now that you’ve read the stories, it’s your turn to weigh in. The winning couple will be revealed Friday.

Gown Guru: My favorite dress

By Liza Treyger

As I’ve been pouring over dresses and designers to discuss with you as the Gown Guru, I thought I’d reflect on that one dress that sticks in my mind, even two years after seeing it.

Olivia Wilde in Reem Acra

Olivia Wilde in Reem Acra.

This is Olivia Wilde (I thought she was the queen from the movie 300, but she’s not). She is still an absolute vision in a Reem Acra gown from the 2008 Emmy Awards. Was it made for the red carpet or for a walk down the aisle? Who cares? This is a perfect dress for anybody that wants to look glamorous and sexy but be super comfortable. The worst thing to see is a bride stuffed into a dress that limits her movement. If you are not dancing or getting silly at your wedding then don’t have a wedding because you are boring. If you want to have fun this is the perfect blend of silk and chiffon giving a bride class and comfort.

guru_wilde02

"Was it made for the red carpet or for a walk down the aisle? Who cares?"

Top Qualities:

1. The ruching and high waist make it perfect if you want to show off how skinny you are or hide a little belly or big butt.

2. The low-cut either shows off collarbones or breasts and for some lucky ladies both.

3. Can you say diamond-encrusted sleeves? A great way to show off how much money you have is by putting jewels on a simple design. Pretend that you don’t need to prove how much money you have (or pretend you have more than you really do) by wowing your guests with this elegant touch.

4. If you wear a gown that’s not meant for a wedding, you prove to everyone just how cool you really are.

What’s the most beautiful dress you’ve ever seen? Share with us and our gown guru will feature it in an upcoming article!

Tori Amos & Mark Hawley

Hawley & Amos

Hawley & Amos

Sometimes personal tragedy can bring a couple closer, as is the case in today’s couple. In 1996, songstress, Tori Amos was on tour when she discovered she was expecting a child with her sound engineer, Mark Hawley. A few months into the pregnancy, she suffered a miscarriage. It was that heartbreaking event which actually strengthened their relationship.

Amos immediately began working on a new album (The Choirgirl Hotel) to cope with the loss of their baby. Hawley collaborated with as the sound engineer and they spent more and more time together.

“We were the only two people that could really talk to each other about it,” she told an Us reporter in 1998.

As they grew closer, Hawley popped the question and as Amos told a The Times UK, “I just looked, and it felt like: ‘Yes. This is my dear friend…’”

Torchbearers lead the newlweds and their wedding party.

Torchbearers lead the newlweds and their wedding party.

Just weeks after the release of The Choirgirl Hotel, the couple were married at the St. Lawrence Church in West Wycombe, England. It was a medieval-inspired affair, with torchbearers leading Amos in a silver cape and guests to the ceremony. A horse-drawn carriage whisked them away at the end of the evening.

Today, the couple is still going strong. And although they suffered the loss of one child, Amos and Hawley are now the proud parents of a daughter, Natashya Lórien, born in 2000.

Martin Van Buren & Hannah Hoes

The Van Burens

The Van Burens

Our eighth president of the US made it official with his first lady, Hannah 203 years ago today.

The two grew up childhood sweethearts (and distant cousins) in a New York Dutch community. After establishing himself as a lawyer, Van Buren married Hoes in a Dutch Reformed Church ceremony. The affair took place at the bride’s brother’s home, the Huxton House in Catskill, New York. He was 25 – his bride, 24.

Over the next 11 years, the couple had 11 sons. Unfortunately, Mrs. Van Buren never lived to see her husband become president. She passed away in 1819 and he wasn’t elected until 1836. Although she never officially served as first lady to the country, she was the first lady in his heart. He never remarried.

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Dress to Impress

By Social Grace

Never leave your house in Sleep Wear. Remember ladies, Lounge Wear and Exercise Pants are exceptable… don’t push it.

Okay, so we understand the wonderful feeling of pajamas on at all hours of the day…we are Editors of an Internet Magazine, are we not? Who blogs in their power suits? When we talk about going out, we don’t mean going all out! Jeans and a tee are much classier than slippers and plaid flannel. We are all about dressing comfortable, but remember: if the outfit makes you yawn, put it back in your dresser.

Pat Benatar & Neil Geraldo

0220_Benatar

Benatar & Geraldo

Twenty-eight years ago today, rocker Pat Benatar married her guitarist and producer, Neil Geraldo.

The romance started when Geraldo collaborated on her debut album “In the Heat of the Night” as a co-producer, songwriter and band member. He wrote a single from the album called “We Live for Love”, supposedly about Benatar.

Three years after that album was released, the couple married on a secluded beach in Maui, Hawaii. The ceremony was so private that the only guests were two strangers they saw walking by. Benatar and Geraldo asked them to be their witnesses.

Through the years, the couple have continued to write, record and perform together. all over the world. Their collaborations also include two daughters, Haley and Hana.

After 28 happy years, the couple show that they still “live for love.”

Happy anniversary!
