Conan O’Brien & Liza Powel

The key to a good marriage is a sense of humor and today’s couple has plenty of that.

Late night talk show host, Conan O’Brien met his bride, Elizabeth “Liza” Powel when she was appeared on the Late Show in 2000 in a sketch involving the advertising company where she worked.

They married two years later during a rainstorm at Seattle’s St. James Cathedral. Although it was a Catholic ceremony, the priest (one of O’Brien’s college friends) managed to write some jokes into the service.

Eight years later, the couple are living in sunny California with their two children, Neve and Beckett.

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Avoiding Wallflower Status

Nervous to attend a party? Ask people about themselves…it always works!

Going to parties alone can be brutal: you don’t know anyone, you have to arrive alone and you don’t have a for sure dance partner. When in doubt, ask people questions! Everyone loves talking about themselves and asking people some simple questions will get the ball moving in the direction of friendship.

The biggest plus to attending functions alone is that you are bound to meet new people. You are not restricted by the friends you are with or the date you brought. You are free to talk to whom ever you like for as long as you like… just don’t forget to ask some questions!

On this day in wedding history, multi-talented actors and performers Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel were married. The Broadway darlings met when they were bothcast in the original production of the musical “Rent”. They’ve both gone onto successful careers in theater, TV and film, building a successful relationship along the way.

Their wedding ceremony was held at the Round Hill Hotel and Villas in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Diggs discovered the location while shooting “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” in the Carribean. They mixed both Jewish and African traditions into their private ceremony. Seven years later, Tidina (as they are known to fans) are still going strong and welcomed a son in September.

Fergie & Josh Duhamel

Josh Duhamel & Fergie

The first year is always the hardest! A year ago today, actor Josh Duhamel married singer Fergie (Stacey Ferguson) at the Church Estates Vineyards in Malibu, CA.

The couple met in September, 2004 when her band, The Black Eyed Peas, made a guest appearance on the television show Las Vegas, which Duhamel starred in.

Recently, a scandal threatened their marriage, when a stripper named Nicole Forrester claimed she had an affair with Duhamal. He denied it and Fergie is standing by her man.

The traditional anniversary for the first year is paper. We just hope that they don’t get divorce papers.

Vince Neil & Lia Gerardini

It was a rock ‘n’ roll wedding for Motley Crew frontman Vince Neil and his girlfriend Lia Gerardini five years ago today.

The musician who appeared on VH1’s “The Surreal Life” invited his cast mate MC Hammer to officiate the ceremony.

“It’s Hammer time!” the rapper-turned-reverend reportedly shouted as he escorted Neil down the aisle.

The Las Vegas wedding was attended by a slew of celebrity guests, including Motley Crew bandmates Nikki Six, Tommy Lee, Dennis Rodman and more.

It just goes to show that “A Surreal Life” makes for a surreal wedding.

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Never Assume

Don’t ever assume someone’s pregnant. Just don’t…

As a rule, you should never comment on someone’s weight unless you notice they have lost weight. This would then be an encouragement. However, don’t go overboard. Excessively telling someone how thin they look now might make them feel that they were the opposite of thin before. Think before you speak, ladies!

Sports is often something that can tear a couple apart, but it’s actually what brought today’s couple together. Hannah Storm and Dan Hicks were both working as sportscasters at CNN when they met in 1990. As the two shared adjacent desks, their romance blossomed and on January 8, 1994 they were married at a Roman Catholic ceremony in Manhattan.

Now whoever said office romances don’t work?

POLL: Leap Day?

By Shannon Ayers

Leap Year opens in theaters today

The new movie Leap Year, starring Amy Adams, hits theaters today. It’s based on an old Irish tradition that every four years, women can propose to their boyfriends on February 29th (Leap Day). In other words, it’s Sadie Hawkins Day, but for marriage.

So, we’d like to know what you think. Would you ever practice this tradition?

And what do you think about the tradition? Leave lengthier comments below.

Corey Hart & Pink on their wedding day

Carey Hart & Pink on their wedding day.

Date: January 7, 2006
Couple: Pink & Carey Hart

Nothing has been traditional about the marriage of on-again, off-again couple Pink and Carey Hart.

After four years of dating, Pink (real name Alecia Moore) proposed to her future husband, a motocross racer, by holding up a sign at one of his races. He reportedly drove off the track right away to say yes. He didn’t win that race, but he did win the hand of his bride.

The couple was married January 7, 2006 at a beach in Costa Rica. And although the singer didn’t wear pink, she and groom both went barefoot for the sunset ceremony.

Since then, they’ve separated and reconciled. Here’s to their 4th anniversary and hopes that their road ahead is nothing but smooth!

The Marriage of George Washington & Martha Custis

Date: January 6, 1759
Couple: George Washington & Martha Dandridge Custis

On this day in 1759, an officer in the Virginia militia named George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis, a widowed mother of two. They chose to have their wedding on the Epiphany, a day of celebration that’s also known as the 12th Night. The young man went on to become the first president of the United States and Martha, our first first lady.

Fun fact: The Washingtons were married at Martha’s home in Virginia, which was appropriately named The White House. Washington may be the only president to not live in the White House, but he was married in one!
