Lisa Loeb & Roey Hershkovitz

Songstress Lisa Loeb & her beau Roey Hershkovitz married one year ago today had a very business-like beginning.

In Fall of 2006, Hershkovitz, a TV producer & music coordinator met with Loeb in Los Angeles to pitch potential show to her. Both agreed that they had more than business on the brain at their initial meeting.

“She curtsied. I had been charmed and thought she was very cute and cool,” Hershkovitz said.

“I had a crush on my meeting,” Loeb added.

Despite the two’s beautiful union they decided to part ways blaming bad timing, but six weeks later the couple was back together and ready for wedded bliss. Just one month after their reunion Hershkovitz proposed at the Maritime Hotel in front of a fireplace.

Loeb told reporters about her perfect proposal: “Billecart rosé salmon pink champagne; miniature Star Wars figurines that looked like us in last year’s Halloween costumes; and he brought a boom box that played our song ‘All Night Long’ by Lionel Ritchie. We celebrated with dinner at Scarpetta, over black pasta and every dessert, and then raced off to see AC/DC at Madison Square Garden.”

Happy one year from us at Proposal!!!!

The Dalís

The next time you see a Salvador Dalí painting with a woman in it (and there a lot), chances are it’s Gala Diaknova. After Dali met her in 1929, she became the only model he used in his artwork.

She was Dalí’s muse, his lover and his business manager, supervising several exhibitions in Europe and the U.S. And this all happened while she was married to another man.

In 1932, Gala divorced her first husband, Paul Éluard, and on January 30, 1934, she and Dalí were married in a civil ceremony in Paris. They later had a church ceremony after the death of Gala’s first husband.

The couple was married for 48 years until her death in 1982. But their love lives on in the many masterpieces Dalí created with her image.

Below is a double portrait of the two:

The Newmans on their wedding day.

The Newmans on their wedding day.

January 29, 1958
Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward

There’s nothing like a long, hot summer to get your heart pumping!

That’s how Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward began their relationship on the set of the film, The Long Hot Summer. As their friendship grew, Newman and Woodward soon realized that their love was going to last longer than the shooting schedule.

The couple wed on January 29th 1958 at the Hotel El Rancho Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“We are very, very different people and yet somehow we feed off those varied differences and instead of separating us, it has made the whole bond a lot stronger,” Newman said of his wife.

And Woodward said of her husband, “Being married to Paul is being married to the most considerate, romantic man.”

It’s no wonder that their marriage lasted over fifty years.

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Shhh!

By Shannon Ayers
200/365 S is for SHHH!

Image by kharied (brief hiatus) via Flickr

While in public places, especially places like libraries please keep your voice down!

It doesn’t matter who you are talking to or what you are talking about, you don’t want to annoy everyone around you by loudly talking on your cell phone.

Have you ever heard someone discussing the intricate details of pastries while you tried to read in the library?

If you must talk, do it very quietly.

Do everything you can to not become “that person”!

A proposal at a wedding?

By Tia Ayers

This might be the first woman to be proposed to while wearing a wedding dress.

It’s not what you think, though. Instead of committing a major no-no in wedding etiquette (pulling focus away from the bride!), this future groom proposed to his girlfriend at a bridal fashion show.

It obviously took a lot of factors to pull off this proposal and keep it a secret, but if you’ve got the connections, why not?

Grace’s Social Tip of the Day: Watch Your Mouth!

By Social Grace
swearing in cartoon

Always watch your language, especially when outside the privacy of your home.

Talk like a sailor and ship your chances of ladyhood out to sea! Here are some places you should avoid using dirty words..And we’ll tell you why.

1. First impressions are everything so remember when meeting new people, limit your cursing and you will limit your chance at being offensive.

2. Don’t curse at work. Using bad language can look very unprofessional and can promote an appearance of ignorance.

3. Avoid cursing in front of children. It doesn’t matter if they are your children or not, nothing shows lack of responsibility like neglecting your adulthood status in front of youngsters. Set a good example and you’ll like the results. :-)

DeVito & Perlman back in the day

January 28, 1982
Danny DeVito & Rhea Perlman

Whoever sang “It Never Rains in Sunny California” didn’t go to Danny DeVito & Rhea Perlman’s wedding on this day in 1982.

The couple, who had been together for 11 years before making it official, were wed in a rainy, garden ceremony on a Thursday** afternoon.

Known for their work in comedy, they couldn’t help but interject humor into their nuptuals. The two walked down the aisle to a recording of Our Gang’s Alfalfa singing “I’m in the Mood for Love.”

Perlman wore a rented antique gown because she reportedly couldn’t decide between a sweatsuit or a T-shirt. To top it off, the ceremony took place during DeVito’s lunch break from the show “Taxi.” No word on whether he made it back to work on time.

After 28 years of marriage (and 39 years of partnership), the couple are still in the mood for love and it’s safe to say, laughter is always at their side.

Grace’s Tip of the Day: Weddings Under the Influence

By Social Grace
Nathan and Haley's wedding reception

Don’t get drunk at a wedding.
Nothing is classy about getting all dressed up just to fall down.

People remember, try to limit your alcohol intake at weddings. It doesn’t matter if there is an open bar; that doesn’t mean “get trashed.” Have respect for your friends and family a.k.a. the people taking care of you.

Family tension and big parties can carry enough drama without throwing black-outs and one night stands in the mix. It can happen to you!

Drink if you want, even get a little tipsy, but trust us, stay responsible and you’ll feel better in the morning.

Bill "Bojangles" Robinson

Bill Robinson & Elaine Plaines

If you’re going to get married twice (and we won’t judge you if you do), you might as well have it be on the same day. The famous tap dancer Bill Robinson, known to audiences as Bojangles, did just that.

In 1922, the dancer married Fannie S. Clay in Chicago. She became his business manager and secretary. Little else is known about their marriage.

Robinson with his bride, Elaine Plaines.

Robinson with Elaine Plaines.

Then in 1944, a year after divorcing Clay, Robinson married a dancer named Elaine Plaines. Their marriage lasted until his death in 1949.

Some might think that choosing the same wedding day twice is bad luck, but at least you won’t get your anniversary date messed up with the previous marriage.
